Possibly being a bit dumb - no comments thank you Mr Willks - but why can I see my avatar when logged out - along with everyone else's but as soon as I log in they all disappear - is there an account setting I'm missing somewhere?

Settings in User CP, then edit options, then Thread Display Options then you should see show avatars.
