The UKSA are able to take Royal Navy qualifications that include STCW 95 and Command exams and validate them for commercial use after an assessment board - I'd give them a bell for advice.

Stu

Depends which ticket you are after, some STCW tickets require RYA as pre entry reqirement.

What level are you going for?

Having done a few courses at Warshash I later discovered there was a few short cuts I could have taken.

Surprises surprise none of the centres I called for advice told me this, instead they tried selling me the full courses. The lesson was I should have gone to the source-the MCA and not the schools for advice.

Hi Doug

OSV Mates ticket is what I am after eventually but that may mean going to Sea School which can't happen for a year at least.

Until then I guess these are the ones I am after

Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boat (STCW A-VI/2-1)
Medical Emergency First Aid (STCW A-VI/4-1)
Advanced Training in Fire Fighting (STCW A-VI/3)
Proficiency in Fast Rescue Boat (STCW A-VI/2-2)

I am hoping that my very expensive OPITO tickets will cover the First Aid and Firefighting

Stu

Absolutly now idea if they will let you cross over, give Seafarer training a call and ask 2 talk to an examiner.

I sent one of my guys down the road for adv FF lat year - was about £600 and 4 days I think.

I can point u towards someone who will help with Medical First Aid, we organised a couple last year but have binned it now due to a lack of demand among our customers, give me a call.

Doug

Stu, if are going to speak to Seafarer Training and Certification speak to me first, i used to be on of them and although i don't know the rules inside out i can tell you names of who you need to speak to. I could always speak to them for you and get the answer, that goes for anyone on here as well.

Those that you have listed are the Basis Training Certificates. To qualify for anything STCW ish you will most likely need all of them. As i say, speak to me and i can give u neams of the people that will know the stuff rather than just getting fobbed off on to the next person. Good Luck

STCW tickets

Dear Rogue Wave,

Just registered after having seen your queries on the forum. I was a Merchant Navy Navigating Officer Foreign Going from 1970 - 1980, and not a lot has changed apart from cost, bullshit and terminology.

Forget Warsash unless you have just won the the lottery..! Not many other nautical colleges left, but can recommend Lowestoft and South Shields
( Newcastle), for most of the old Department of Transport courses, now called STCW ??

A four day Fire Fighting course in a shoreside ship mock - up in Shields cost me about £450 in 1992, and you are in full fireman's kit with BA, dragging simulated bodies about ( stuffed full of sand ), up and down engine room ladders !

You need to be a little bit fit for this course...!

Depending upon what exactly you want to do STCW wise, then contact either of these colleges, but you will need to check out relevant sea time before you part with any money, and the Dept. of Transport, as I remember them WILL check your records/discharge book if you have one.

Yours, possibly unhelpfully

Amalric.

Thanks guys,

Thanks for the first aid offer but I always use Dave Manning for that he really knows his stuff after a lifetime working as a Paramedic so it would make sense for us to get him registered/qualified as a trainer for that mob as well His resuss dolls are a bit iffy though I think he gets em from Anne Summers.

Almaric thanks for the advice to be honest I'd prefer the East ..
coast cos I think the sea is a bit more challenging there. re the ladder I shall start practising carrying people up ladders I shall start off with Gray and work my way up to BenC

Gray thanks I'll be over to see you soon
