Never heard of a "Master Mariner" being limited to 150 miles or 200 gt. By definition a Master Mariner is an unrestricted (by size, power or operating area) ticket. I think you mean "Master 200 restricted".

Impressive list though, I bet that took some grafting

Master

Hi Doug,

Apologies, you are correct. Rephrase ; Master 200 Restricted.

And yes it certainly wasn't an easy one... I would advise anyone sitting it to complete their Yachtmaster Ocean theory first.. It is a big help !!

Cheers

Jon

Why?

Interested because I teach Ocean Theory (anyone want lessons?) & got most of the tickets you have as well (my YM being Ocean sail/power).

PS all RYA YM tickets are endorsed Master 200grt, when commercial.
Or are you talking about the MCA version, which the RYA claim is the same as theirs?

MCA version hense the OOW 500 and I wasn't aware the the RYA have claimed it is the same as yachtmaster as the minimum entry requirement for the MCA Masters is yachtmaster.

The RYA Yachtmaster does not enable you to sail as mate on a vessel especially over 200gt.

It may be worth having a look at the MCA Masters content if you have any doubt as to wether it is the same as the RYA or not.

Not quite true.

For commercially and privately operated, yachts power and sail (but excluding square riggers), up to 12 passengers, over 200 gt but up to 500 gt
  • Up to 60nm offshore a RYA Yachtmaster Coastal can be the mate.
  • Up to 150nm offshore a Yachtmaster Offshore can be the mate

The OOW 500 does not kick in as a requirement as a mate's ticket for yachts under 500 gt until you operate in cat 0 (i.e. more than 150nm offshore).

some of the key benefits of the master 200 ticket are

  • Allows you to mate over 150nm offshore upto 500 gt
  • Is recognised in law by all IMO signatories, who may not all recognise the RYA certs
  • Raises your game significantly and better prepares you for the world of large commercail yachts.
  • Introduces you to a great deal of legislation with which you must comply but are not made aware of before this level.
  • Is a stepping stone to the master 500 (if you wanted to follow that route)
  • Gives you a taster of what comes next if you choose to follow the OOW 3000 route

Oow

thanks for that Doug, it can also scare the hell out of you, if intending on furthering to OOW / Master 500. It is certainly an eye opener!
