Rib Insurance - Personal and Hire

Ok, done a search in this folder but not found the answer.

A friend of mine has a 5Mtr Humber rib that he has bought for his use and (hopefully) as a hire boat to local sailing clubs.

The clauses for hire will be that the helm will have to be trained to PB2 minimum.

Can anyone advise on an insurance company that will be able to assist. He went to all those at ExCeL but know one was able to quote there as for some reason it isn't the norm.

Also would the rib have to be coded? We are not doing rib rides.

If you would rather PM me then feel free and if I have forgotten anything please ask.

thanks in advance

If you are planning to charter the boat out then you would have to be coded. I am not sure how things would work under the RYA banner ie. an rya Event or training.
Try Bristol Channel Marine Near Cardiff for insurance

I'll be interested to see where this thread goes. If the plan is to hire the boat to sailing clubs (presumably as a safety boat?) - the common view is that this doesn't need coding. In fact, many clubs (certainly those hosting big meetings) simply couldn't manage if that wasn't the case. For example, last year I helped out as safety cover in a racing fleet of 200 dinghies. There were 30 RIBs on the water providing safety cover - many of them on loan or hire - and I think mine was probably the only coded boat among them. There may also be a distinction between hiring out just the boat and hiring the boat plus himself as crew.

Surprised no-one would quote. Probably just the wrong staff at exhibitions. He needs to phone up and ask to speak to one of the underwriters.

Insurance

Presently have Porthcawl insurance as a broker and have been very helpful last two years and recent weeks with boat changes and coded RIB. I am sure they will search appropriate cover.

They wont insure apparently, the boat is too small, only going to be used as a support boat so we may have to put out a clause when it goes out for hire.

Will update if we get anything.

Odd - my current 5.8m RIB is insured through Porthcawl for pleasure, RYA tuition and safety boat work.

My old 4.7m was also insured by them for pleasure and safety boat work.

Have you tried GJWDirect? - www.gjwdirect.co.uk

Same here; they will happily cover a 3m Rigiflex for safety work.
