We are cat3 unrestricted (20 miles day or night) but we have a cabin.

Anyone know if single engine is restrictive on getting cat 2?

I tried for cat 2, got a cabin etc, had a load of trouble with the MCA first they said yes then no, put up all kinds of excuses but never got it, they said cabin to small, when I pointed out it had more space than the lift raft I had to carry they went on to something else, single engine was one excuse, again there are plenty of single engined commercial boats out there, then fire control and safety gear, it just went on and on, to my mind they need to get out on these boats before making any decisions which I offered, didn't take up the offer, scared to get out from behind there desks me thinks

It shouldnt be, as there are quite a few Cat 2 single engine hard boats out there. The only Cat 2 RIBs I have come across though are a couple of Redbay 11's and they were both twin engined.

Can someone just tell me if my understanding is correct:
If 6+ metre RIB can be coded to Cat3R, this will allow daytime operation of the full 20 miles, but 10 miles after dark?
Or may you be easier to follow the Cat4+3R guides to allow 20 Miles during daylight and favourable weather, and 10 miles after dark?

Cat 3 restricted at night may depend on your coding authority. We operate Cat 3 (r) which as you say is 20 miles daytime and we have 3 miles at night from safe haven with conditions of clothing. This is on 8.5 m ribs

Do you have a seasonal requirement? Or any favourable weather requirement during daylight? I really shouldn't be trying to read the codes this late at night....

The restrictions are at the discretion of your surveyor/certifying authority. The RIBs that I used to operate were limited to 20 miles by favourable weather and daylight, 3 miles at night providing that protective clothing and life jackets were worn by everyone on board.

We have same as SW ribs on coding, the favourable weather issue is defined by the MCA and we can't remain at sea for period over 24 hrs.
So 20 miles daylight hrs and 3hrs during darkness with clothing and life jackets (the LJs are always worn whatever the time)

We also have Cat3R, but our night time wording is different!
We have 3 miles from shore (not safe haven). Which means we could run along the coast staying inland and not restricted to 3 miles from safe haven.
Not that we do this, thought I would share the different wording.

Just to clarify, are you guys talking about open rib's regards cat 3R ? Ie: no protection enclosure at all?

My only experience of coding a rib is a full cabin rib, which attained cat 3 unrestricted.

As far as I understood all cat 3 vessels have the 34hr opps limitation, even out "unrestricted" cat 3z

Yes open ribs hence night restrictions, used to have to carry a bow canopy as temp enclosure on 3R but that has been removed

Not correct, there are lots of hard boats which are category 3, but do not have the 24 hour operational limit. The 24 hour limit is added when a boat does not provide sufficient accommodation for the crew such as running water, a cooker, bunks with lee cloths and a toilet (because of course people can hold on for upto 24 hours without needing to go!!)

OAN678 from the MCA refers to Cat 3 restricted.

The matrix at the end shows what you need to have. It, thankfully, removes the "discretion" that we were encouraged to apply by Owners and is now very clear as to what is required.

When we coded 250kts RIB this matrix didn't exist, so we applied what we considered sensible conditions and then had to get individual approval from MCA - which will be why his wording may be a ;little different to standard.

"Celtic Wanderer" is coded to 3R, 20 miles daylight and 10 at night and is an open boat. To comply we have to have all persons on board wearing survival suits / dry suits with thermal protection and auto life jackets with lights, spray hoods etc. we also had to carry a secondary means of propulsion, we used aux outboard but was told by cert authority engineer that paddles would be sufficient!!!

We've just received our Cat 3 (R) 10nm certificate for "Bennan"; fairly straightforward procedure if somewhat painful on the wallet... But it does now mean that we can trundle folk around* if they miss the last ferry!
