There is no link between getting your basic PB2 certificate commercially endorsed, and doing intermediate or advanced. (And the PBI certificate is not in any way commercially endorsable.)

If you want to get your basic PB2 cert commercially endorsed then you need to have a current first aid cert, plus a doctors medical, plus a sea survival cert. Its then a paper exercise to get the PB2 stamped for commercial.

However, if you take and pass PB2 advanced, you cannot get this endorsed in the same way. You have to take a separate exam before you will be granted PB2 advanced commercial.

This would also enable me to get my Intermediate and Advanced tickets.

Question first, do you want to get your Level 2 Coastally Endorsed, the PBI Certificate or both?

If Level 2: Realistically it depends on your level of experience already in a coastal environment. It could be that you could undertake a direct assessment if your experience is fully there plus of course handling with tide too. Another option could be that you spend a day with an Instructor to brush up on the coastal elements. One option that merits consideration is to do the entire Level 2 course in a Coastal Envirnomnet again, this may sound like overkill however if you feel that you need to develop the coastal theory knowledge and want to teach in a coastal envirnoment then there can be real benefits in both seeing the course run in this environment (which typically is very different) whilst developing skills at the same time.

If PBI: A day's assessment by a Trainer of your knowldege, boat handling and ability to teach the coastal subjects at a coastal center.

Commercial Endorsement requires a qualification that can be commercially endorsed as well as :-

RYA Sea Survival
RYA VHF / DSC License
Medical from your GP (ENG1 or ML5 - form from MCA website)
Current First Aid Certificate

If you want to get your Coastal, then perhaps a better route would be to go for the Advanced PBI training which can be done at a Coastal Centre...problem sorted...Jono and others here would be able to advise better than I...

ENG1 is not a medical form that can be signed of by any GP you have to a GP that is approved by the MCA same as UKOOA tickets and it's a harder examination. But it's only needed for real commercial shipping work. ML5 can be signed of by your GP and is fine for powerboat use.

The ENG1 Is a thorough medical, probably works out as a pretty economic checkup for a 100 kwid

I don't think you need any medical ticket to get you PB2 ticket's coastal box ticked, however

Hi, perhaps i misunderstand but how is Steve's desire to coastally endorse his certificates addressed by "be to go for the Advanced PBI training"?

Sorry to hijack the thread, but, can I have some advice of the best places to do a PBI course in the North Wales or North West region within the next 2-3 months? My boat is kept on the Menai Straits.

I have already:

PB2
PB Intermediate
VHF
Commercial Sea Survival
PWC Instructor
First Aid
Day Skipper Theory

Looking to do the course before April to avoid having to pay to do a assessment to do the course (and I am not saying it is a bad thing just do not like paying for things so you can do something else)

I did mine at PPT (Professional Powerboat Training) In Pwllheli with Jono. I found it to be a great course and i learnt a huge amount even though i had done similar courses to you before. We used very new boats which was great. Its also a great location to do your course in as there is such nice scenery.

We are running training & teaching skills and syllabus familiarisation (non RYA) 5th - 14th February followed by an RYA Instructor Course 15th, 16th, 17th February.

Hi Paul,

As with many things, people tend to move onwards and upwards and if Steve intends (although no intent was mentioned by him) to carry on with getting or adding coastal experience, as a PB2 holder, a natural progression COULD be to go on to the advanced course at a coastal centre, thus killing the proverbial two birds with one stone...

I think Steve is talking about a different endorsement. If memory serves, if you do an RYA course on inland waters, you can't teach in coastal waters unless you get the 'coastal' bit 'endorsed' on your certificate.

The easiest way is to do the course in a coastal location.

At least - I THINK that's what he meant......!!
