Change of ownership survey

What do you guys think of the above surveys.........
Just wrong in my opinion, the boat I bought had its 1st survey in 2008 then mid 2010 then again in 2011 due to changes made and now due its 5th year in September.......
But as ive just bought it I need a change of owner survey.
Each survey cost £500-£700.
I just think its wrong as the certifying authority told its to check the safety equipment, as skipper/managing agent your responsible for it anyway..

A change of ownership survey should not cost anything like that, who on earth are you coding with? Thats full (5 yrs.) out of the water prices!

Doug's right. Shouldn't be anywhere near that.

We would normally charge about £100 for a boat that we did the original inspection on if brought to us.

If not a boat we've previously Inspected or if it's not local we would charge £90 per hour plus mileage. Difficult to make it much more than £350 - £400 unless a lot of travel involved.

Was quoted £190 + travel fees etc, thats what they had said the last time and was £500 Im near Aberdeen.

I just dont see the point in the inspection....its my responsibility to check equipment and abide by the code.

Its like selling a car and the new owner having to get a change of owner mot...

I think it should cost travel expenses only if you continue/stay with the origanal certifying auth.

The old owners getting screwed also he paid for a 5yr survey that doesn't last 5 years..... Should he get a rebate or should this money be offset against the change of ownership survey.

Hi Ruari, I understand exactly what your saying but unfortunatly not all boat opperators are as law abideing as most of us, and we are talking about peoples lives, the way I see the new owner inspection is to ensure nothing equipment wise was removed from the vessel? and to ensure the new owner is aware of what the vessel is equiped with? I know..... It still just hacks me off, the problem I have is my location for the certifying authority im just as well getting my 5 yr survey done for cost.

I like to do things by the book but just feel there is always a big focus on the coded boats but not the uncoded.
I bet we all know of someone whos uncoded and supposedly takes out passengers.
Ive got no time for trawlers turned charters taking public on trips, do it by the code or get lost!

Hello guys need to ask as just had my first survey.
I went for a 5yr full survey instead of change of ownership, Was charged £850 + £200 for travel.
The surveyor had to travel 2hrs each way so £200 fair enough.
But what about the cost £850 from certifying auth, seems a bit steep?

I would like to know which certifying body this was, I think you will find that YBDSA (for example) will only be charging £120 for their part of the process, assuming this was a straight forward survey, i.e. no added stability survey etc.
£200 for travel, I see that you are in Stonehaven so the surveyor won't have been using motorways, so lets assume he was travelling at a constant 50mph that's a generous 100 miles each way, £1 a mile good going really, going rate is about 50p per mile.
By my reckoning, that's £830 per day for the surveyor, nice work if you can get it!!!
ps my last 5 year (Mar 2012) cost me under £500 all in, including roughly 2 hours each way travelling.

Its a 10 mtr boat, no stability test done straight forward survey, all my kit was laid out for them etc etc.
