It's so often the construction of sentences that gives it away....

Substitute 'John Smith' with 'Vladymir Bolokov' and then read his written enquiry out loud and it's nigh impossible to speak it in anything other than in a thick eastern European accent!

The scam starts by them offering to pay you substantially more than the cost of the charter using a credit card. They then ask you to transfer the difference to their 'agent' so that he can book their travel etc. The credit card turns out to be stolen, so gets charged back. You have then lost the money you paid to their 'agent'.

Ah! I see. But surely no one would be daft enough to fall for that one

I'd assumed that the charter included a skipper/crew, not bareboat.

This scam seems to have been doing the rounds from yacht charters in Florida to bed and breakfast in New Zealand.

Out of interest I wanted to have a look to find out where exactly 34 St Vincent Street, Glasgow is? The only building I can find is this rather grand entrance next to the Skipton Building Society at 50 St Vincent Street. Anyone from Glasgow know what the building is? Please don't say it's the HQ for the serious fraud office!

Just had a look on scamwarners, & it's as SWBT said, advance payment etc. I just can't believe that anyone would fall for it, let alone a business. It's the kind of obvious, blunt scam that you'd have zero sympathy for any numpty who got taken in.

PS, anybody want a cheap Betamax?

Poor Ol John Smiff, has so many email addresses and each e mail has the same words and date of inquiry

John Smith <joh619v@gmail.com>
John Smith <joh06vv@gmail.com>
John Smith <joh06v@gmail.com>

This must work somewhere as he has tried before with a few operators locally I know.

Occasionally I feel like running with it to see how far we can keep him/her on the line and offering some ridiculous bathtub based in outer Mongolia!

I'll take the charter and his money but wouldn't transfer the money back, just to see what he would do
