As for Petrol - it is an issue for logistics. After you have recovered your boat every night for a week to tow it through rural roads to fill up - you will appreciate more why it puts people off... it means you NEED a shore crew to bring the tow vehicle and trailer to fairly remote spots. it means you need to fart about taking your boat out the water every night when all you want to do is fix any faults and get some rest. If all the boats in the rally/race do this then it is going to be a big bottleneck too. [/QUOTE]

Do you believe that a team would enter this race without a shore crew.

How in the name of God are you planning to tackle the N. Ireland border in a RIB??

Well it would be more of a challenge if you did it without! Actually I suspected most people have some sort of support "crew" - but dragging an empty trailer around the country so you can fill it up each night seem a bit tedious.

As for alternative countries with such a challenge - how about this: http://www.hotribs.co.uk/03press/251...shbucklers.asp

Clearly the 50ft super boats are not going to be trailered to a pokey little filling station in the middle of no where to top up with a few thousand litres.
There'll be a tanker on the dockside at each port of call.

we will all have to drag the trailers round. what if the boats need repairing.
Some wont even make it to some of the destinations it all adds up to the fun and adventure.

I have many mates who can't wait to support us. Not sure you understand the principle of this event. Problems bring them on.

I think that is precisely what the original questioner was hoping to hear...

...mmm - well once you have done the event perhaps you will post here with one of these statements "I am really glad there was no dockside petrol available, it really added to the fun/challenge/excitement to drag my boat out the water and get to the local (1 hour round trip!) filing station - before I shut at 5pm..." OR "I think this event would run so much smoother and give the little guy a fairer chance against the big teams if dockside petrol could be organised"

Perhaps you are right and i don't undertsand - but I think there are a lot of people here put off circumnavigating the UK (not necessarily as part of a race) by the limitted availability of dockside petrol.

That's certainly the intention, although as far as I know the practicalities have yet to be worked out.

A race around NZ south island would be of similar scale to a round britain race (and since I believe you aren't going round the top - you can't complain they aren't doing a full cicumnavigation
).

So glad you came up with a location on the otherside of the world. Not sure that many of us could get our boats there.
Must slap meself for getting my facts wrong.
