13 - Done it!

After an eventful week, we're there. Jolly Sailor has passed her timing point off Cape Wrath, and is now en route for Bangor, Northern Ireland.

The run south-east from Iceland was in heavy following seas, enabling the crew to maintain a good average speed.

We're delighted to have achieved what we set out to do, which was to better our previous transatlantic time. It's not a world record as such, but unofficially, it's still the fastest transatlantic ever by a RIB. Undoubtedly we would have done even better had it not been for the severe weather conditions around Greenland.

We're now experiencing the full delight of the north Scottish coast, battering our way through a heavy head sea before making shelter as we head south along the inner islands. More tomorrow on our general feelings after completing the trip.

Wild and windy, Cape Wrath lives up to its name as Jolly Sailor completes the fastest ever transatlantic in a RIB:

Congrats to the crew of the Jolly Sailor! What a relief to hear Dad on the radio interview this morning. You sounded quite relaxed.
Great job, you guys!!!

A very satisfying result for you and the crew, Alan. Good on yer. I'm glad you made it across cleanly and safely. Diana and I look forward to seeing you on your way past Falmouth.

3 naughtical gypsies

Alan, Clive and Egberg arrived in Bangor this afternoon. They looked none the worse after their week at sea. Jan left at Oban and took off on a three hour train journey to Glasgow to catch a flight home. He didn't want to be late for work. Clive was in great form and wetted my thirst for adventure with his story about the trip, Egberg is ready to do it all over again but said he would like a different route next time, he misses his family and would be interested to hear some news of Bear. After Alan had a good meal he returned to the boat. I found him, bare foot, in the bilges
of the engine compartment washing down the engine. He gave me a gentleman's agreement to sell me his yamaha and leg. The
prospective new owner of the boat wants a new engine so i have me fingers crossed that the sale goes through.
The Sprit of the Jolly Sailor intends to leave at midday 5/8/03 en route to the Isle of Man. They may well have a wee escort from some of our local boys.
Alan arrived in Bangor with Gail and young sons on board. They thumbed a lift a few miles offshore. I think, if Gail has her way, there could be quite a party to-night.
Alan has volunteered to sort out a few problems with my mate's
Yamaha in the morning before he leaves. he takes it all in his stride and i think he must have a bit of inside info on these engines. these guys are unstoppable, what next ?

Well done guys !!! Glad to see that you made it safe and sound. Don't let Egbert hang around too long over there and forget that he has to get back here to make sure the rent gets paid.

Congratulations and best regards,

David
