Wtf?

HI,

The business next door to us (Ben ainslie Racing -BAR) are sponsored by Land Rover and today they took delivery of their new all-electric Landy.

However, it arrived by transporter from London as it can't make the journey from London to Portsmouth on a single charge.

Apparently the range is about 50miles (less I guess if you're towing). Can anyone see any prctical use for such a vehicle? I'm struggling!

Steve

I can see quite a few uses. Lets face it if you were regularly driving 50+ miles a defender would rarely be the vehicle of choice for comfort. I'm no electric vehicle expert but my understanding is they are usually poor at high speeds but have lots of torque. Is that not ideal for off road stuff?

I'd have thought it was good for work around a farm / estate where it might do 20-30 miles a day in lots of short trips.

Now, whether they have any need for one in Plymouth might be a different question.

Alright as milk float, technology not moved on much since then
my mates looking at the Mitsubishi Outlander hybrid they boast some where around 140mpg if you keep plugging it, in if not 60 mpg.
50mile range a joke IMO 200 mile I might get interested.

Nissan Leaf is the hot all-electric car over here. It has a range of 101 miles per charge.

I can't even see the practicality of the Leaf, let alone an SUV with an even greater range handicap.

Publicity and marketing. Ben probably hasn't had to pay a penny. Like having a Land Rover with a Briggs Stratton 3hp lawnmower engine.

Many hybrid and Electric cars can not tow boats (strong limitation to trailer GVW)
But can you imagine electric car towing RIB powered by electric outboard ?

Even now you can buy 80 HP torquido outboards ...

It's probably the battery box........

ETA In fact I've just entered '14.2kwh battery' into Google & it comes up with this as one of the first hits. Each battery weighs 158kg & the video says it needs at least 2, so even though it was meant to be humorous I might be nearer the mark than I thought!: Lithium-Ion Batteries
Quick Google of Torqeedo brings up a view of battery installation & they're huge: Deep Blue - Torqeedo

158kg X 2....That would be 300litres of petrol..... 80hp on that size of boat. 500mls?

I wonder what it's range is.

I got to have a closer inspection of the landy on Friday and discovered it has a fuel tank for diesel, but only to power the heater. Apparently, LR have only made 6 of these vehicles.

More like 420 liters - until you factor in the tank v housing weights as well.

An obvious use for this type of setup is SAR/Security on waters where internal combustion motors are banned. Or maybe Green-peas will spring for a fleet of them?
