World Wind

Anybody tried World Wind yet. It's a Satellite Imagery program that enables you to zoom from satellite altitude into any place on Earth.

Using Landsat satellite imagery and Shuttle Radar Topography Mission data, you can experience Earth terrain in 3D, just as if you were really there.

Virtually visit any place in the world. Look across the Andes, into the Grand Canyon, over the Alps, or along the African Sahara. The NY and LA Urban Area maps are unreal, you can even see the cars on the streets!!

Below are a few examples: first two are my local playgrounds, and the other one, well you know that.

WARNING: 170MB Download!!

I have been playing with it for a few days nows. I dont get the slightly sideways views that you get though, only straight-down type shots??
I have Landsat 7 on, positional info and place names.
I went to your first picture location and got this ................not the same at all is it?

Codders, I hope the use of the word "cool" to refer to this tragedy was only insensitivity and not meant maliciously…

Brian, hold the right mouse-button and drag the mouse down to tilt the angle from the vertical. Also scrolling left and right like this, rotates the image.

OMG
Never realised that you could do that.
Brilliant.
Now going away to play some more.

Do love the USA street level stuff. Zoom right into the runways at Boston Airport , for example.

Thanks for that tip.
