Windows messenger

Help

After having my Niece stay at the weekend and letting her use the PC I'm getting lots of Windows messenger type stuff for her.

I can't find a way to permanatly sign off from it.
Its driving me mad.

Nasher.

Google 'delete windows messenger' and you'll find a programme that'll remove it completely. It used to pop up like a rash on mine too. Now its totally missing

Edit-Sorry, google Remove Windows Messenger.

It won't affect MSN messenger if you install it-at least it didn't affect mine.

Its probably set to "sign in automatically" which means it'll sign in to her account when you turn your computer on. Find that tick box and untick it. Then it won't sign in when you turn your computer on but will still be there for your niece if she needs it!

I think you will find the tick box by doing the following:

Double click the little green man by your clock, click on her username at the top (under the word "messenger"). Click on "personal settings" at the bottom of the box that appears, then click on the "general" tab on the left and untick the appropriate box.

If yours is a different version of messenger to mine, it might be different

Guys

Thanks for the help.

Matt

looks like I'll have to try that if I don't get anywhere.

Tim
I don't have the 'General' tab and can't find a 'sign in automatically' check box anywhere.

I'll keep looking.

Nasher.

Managed it thanks

Had to delete the net.passport etc via user accounts in my control panel.

Why is it so difficult?

Glad you sorted it Nasher. MS Messenger was the sorce of one of my problems when I'd reloaded all my software after a mega clean of my Hard drive. Some sort of Spyware was comming in for a couple of weeks though it because it was Signing in without my knowledge.

All sorted now and glad you've done the same.

no fear, its the built in "windows messenger" service, which was implemented mainly for server applications to send notifications to other workstations to inform them of reboots and such like.

To disable it, click start->run, type services.msc.

Scroll down the list and find "Messenger".

Right click, choose properties, click the stop button, and then in the list choose disabled. and click ok

That will stop the messages coming ...

however...

To get those messages in the first place, it sounds like your pc is connect directly to the internet, i.e a modem on your pc rather than a router.... if this is the case, you really need setup a firewall!

If you are using windows xp, you can enabled the built in firewall:

start->run, type firewall.cpl

or goto the control panel and choose "windows firewall"

you can enable it there.

If you don't have windows xp, I suggest installing Zone Alarm

Hope this helps!
