Where's the Solent?

Pardon my ignorance (I'm from the USA). Where's this rib playground called the Solent?

Come over on the QE2 or QM2 from New York and where it stops is the Solent.

Just for info the Solent is the nearest (ASFIK) sea water to South and West London, and has a huge population of leisure craft. Queen Victoria was very fond of Osborne House her home on the Isle of Wight and this led to the establishment of the Solent as a Leisure boating area. Cowes on the Isle of Wight is regarded as the Sailing centre of the World.

Well that's certainly what people from Cowes reckon.
