Van insurance for private use-or would camper insurance be better?

Anyone know of any good companies to insure a van with for private use? I've just bought myself a hitop Bedford Midi so I can stick a bed and sink in it so instead of having to drive home after a hard day's ribbing I can kip in it then do it all again... Campers are too bloody expensive and to be honest I really didn't need 4 beds, mains hookups and a portaloo when a bucket,an inverter and a cheap heater are all I really need.

I think you can get the van re classified as a private vehicle - then you could call it a camper or whatever and pay normal insurance etc.

Be careful with "camper" insurance. There is a legal definition of motorhome to do with "fixed" facilities. I'll try and find a link for you...

Yep, agree with Jono. Putting camping facilities into a van doesn't make it a camper in the eyes of the insurance companies.

Van insurance

Van insurance can be a bit of a nightmare! Some regular car insurance companies will cover vans for private use but it is sometimes difficult to prove you are not using it for commercial purposes. I have had a couple of vans over the years and found that if it was under 2000cc most insurance companies would cover it, I used Tesco's for that one. When I got a larger engined van, I used NFU Mutual. I got a great quote from them. Hope that helps.

Cheers guys. Sussed it-left my details with a load of companies online last night and got a whole load of calls this morning.......they knocked themselves down to £144 for tpft with unlimited mileage for social/domestic/pleasure/commuting....can't complain at that!
