They are a lot safer than they look IF you have the sense to clip onto the wires with a Krab first!!!

Via Ferratas were put up during the war by italian climbing guides to enable commandos to cross the dolomites quickly. now there are many throughout europe.
They are an incredible way to climb often allowing people to climb well beyond their usual climbing ability but in relative safety.
Did some in the south of france a few years ago.
