Things I wish I'd done!

When we bought our new-build house in 1997, I asked the builder 'had they ever installed a car pit in the garage?' 'No' he replied, 'but anything is possible.'

A few days later, the final quote came in. Now bear in mind this is 1997, when petrol cost just 58p a litre.

£5k + VAT. What to dig a hole in the floor, build a temporary timber box for the mould, add reinforcing steel mesh and then back-fill with quick-drying concrete?

Suffice to say... I didn't go ahead... but I've always imagined what if?

The dream lives on... http://mech-mate.co.uk/resources/how...a-motorpit.pdf

The pits.

I'll swap mine with you - over-rated unless you intend spending a large part of your life under vehicles. Bloody nuisance trying to clear up with crap getting between the boards and the boards moving when you least want them to

Four post lift would be nice, as much as it would take up a little bit of space it would also create some, the RIB could go on the lift and a car underneath.

My bike test is something I wish I'd done sooner too!

Someone died in one here two years ago. The gent was working on a fuel leak and was overcome by fumes. 2 or 4 post lift would be my choice now.

A bloke I went to school with was very badly burnt when fuel vapour (in pit) went up around him. There are some pretty nifty whole vehicle jacks about now, cant remember the proper name for them.

"Garage"

"ManSpace"

I built my house first and when finances permitted, built the "garage". Mrs willk was getting ratty about the rideon mower in the front hall. Also the tools, etc. in the downstairs loo. And the dive gear in the spare room.

So she was ready to capitulate.

The builder looked at my plan and said: "You should make that bigger, you'll be spending a lot of time in it". So I did, and pitched the roof higher so there was an option for an attic Operations centre.

I regret not building a chimney into it, a stove would have been nice...

You could have started an 'ole digging thread.

I have discussed this concept at length over long periods of time with Mrs Leapy...in this age of equal rights she feels that "ManSpace" is too discriminatory: maybe, even provocative. For some reason, she feels she has some equity in - her words - "our" RIB which is housed in there

For the sake of the collective peace of mind, "Toy Cupboard" is now the agreed label...but only when in her company. Otherwise, "ManSpace" when down the pub

Rolls off the tongue easier than "that horrible overpriced effin shed of yours".

I must introduce Mrs willk to the term

This didn't surprise me, because I've stored everything including the boat and the kitchen sink in my garage for years.

Back to the original post - I service my own cars, even in mid-winter. However, I'm getting on... (43) and the attraction of driveway maintenance has become less appealing, especially when the boat is snug as a bug. Sure I could move it, but it's a hassle to put it mildly.

I know I'd use a pit, but I'll bet the price to install one hasn't changed much. I don't have the height or space for a 2 or 4 post lift, but that would be ideal.

Don't fancy these things either... scary stuff!
