I was very impressed with that Auchentoshan 3 Woods BTW. Jaysus, what a hangover though. Three Irish shots and I was guaranteed a blinder at 0400hrs.

I am partial to a Laphroaig as you say and a lagavullun as well. But am not a great lover of highland malts but one i got given the other week has turned my head and mouth was fettercairn very easy on the pallet and one that you can take to over a long night with friends. I'll bring a bottle in may

Well you are a braver man than me .. its a low one of my list of likes .. I'm not a fan of the phenolic oilyness

Excellent .. ... erm yes on the second part I forgot to mention that bit ... I think in part because it tastes so good you kinda lose your 'where am I on this bottle?' ometer ?


On another level ..... I dont know if any of you chaps have got into the Yamazaki stuff at all, but boy o boy .. you will have to try it. Ive only experienced the 10 and 18 YO but I think they are fantastic bevvies. Ive never 'drunk' a heavily soaked old style christmas cake yet.. but those whiskies must be close to it

The 10 is still very good value for such a rich product IMHO and as a result is worth a punt .. because you will only get more character with the dearer ones, so if you like the base , you know you are onto a good thing, although its comparitively new ground for me, I only came across them 7 or so years ago, and sadly they dont appear in the shops that often unless you go to a whisky merchant

I think that it's quite coarse and best taken out of doors - on a hill, shore or riverbank - hunting whisky! It's very much the poor cousin of Lagavulin. Still, it's cheap and if the cupboard is bare, I can thole a wee drop of it

So you lot (you silent lurkers) - what's good in the New World? I reckon the Scots made their mark in Canada and the Irish in the USA, hence the spelling. I've only sipped a couple of the big commercial names - Wild Turkey 8yr old is probably the best of them here - but there must be a few better examples that don't make it this far. Any takers? Stoo, J-Y? Anyone?

This stuff is okay might turn you in to a sheep chaser so wouldn't risk it

Ah, so you've been on the Nevis Distillery tour then? and was what we had to try very hard not to do during the introductory film..... It would be safe to say they have taken the tourist thing to a whole new level...

I was going to say I found one recently the name of which escapes me, (May have been Elements?) Much Moroccan spice on the nose. Kind of like it had been matured in Morgans spiced rum barrels! Will try to remember to look in the cupboard tonight.

Well Ralph if there is enough interest it is worth spending some of my winter nights looking at possibilities.

Buffalo Trace is my favourite of the higher end Bourbons you can get here. available in ASDA for £20 a bottle. Very nice in an "Old Fashioned" or a "Mint Julep". Woodford Reserve is a good sipper but a little sweet for my tastes. Buffalo Trace apparently do various special bottlings which are available online but I've never gotten around to trying any.

Another good nightcap alternative is good quality rum which is starting to get easier to find. I came across Appleton Estate XV in Waitrose the other day for around £25 which is quite acceptable over plenty of ice and with a little sliver of lime zest.

As far as Malt is concerned, for me it's a toss up between the 18yo Glenlivet (cracking 'session' whisky) and Lagavulin for winter nights by the fire.

'Cooking' whisky: I've always had a soft spot for "The Bailie Nicol Jarvie" but that's prolly for the label as much as anything else.

I've made myself all thirsty now with more than half the working day still to go!

Somewhere I have a spreadheeet (a couple of years old now) where I had put together a summary of opening / tour times & lat / long of the nearest pier. (The hazards of a broken engine & not enough tiime to rebuild it quick ) Will dig it out & you can use it as a starter for 10.

The biggest problem on Islay was going to be Kilkonan - it either needing a long off road walk from Bruichladdich pier or moor the ribs waaaaaay off Machir Bay and take a Hovercraft / Sib in over the sands. (Unless you know of any handy places to come ashore in the vicinity? - Google satellite pics of the time were a little on the "ive been taken thtrough Scottish weather" quality, and the 1:25K didnlt show anything useful)

Having said that, there are more than enough distilleries with their own piers round your way for a couple of day's amusement!
