Hello fans ... I thought I'd get a bit serious with our favourite drams as there are a few followers on this forum

... and not have the hooray swallyers contaminate our fine subject

This industry is a world wide business, and as a Scot, I am enthused about what we make here, as much as what gets made elsewhere, I am enlightened and amazed on a regular basis with other producers such as Japan, and how such a beverage has essentially the same process that yields such huge variance, but / and also .. how a distillery placement and the raw materials it uses makes such a difference to its end product .. its awesome

I come across gems from time to time that I'd like to share with you guys when I find something of exceptional value .. and I dont envisage this being a popular thread, but I would enjoy constructive opinion on any bevvy you consider worthy

Good idea get a mod to make it into a sticky and we can put are favourites up.
Oh and when you find a gem I don't mind trying it with you.

Apart from the what are we drinking tonight thread,

I thought this subject was worthy on its own ...

I thought i'd post another good find for anyone interested .. its price seems reasonable and my local Tesco supermaket have reflected it, but I'd like to stress how good a dram this is for the £34 money .. Clynelish 14YO 46% abv .. is gorgeous .. smokey but not overly so .. little bit oily but not overly so and a touch of sweetness its bloody marvellous imho .. I get a lot of other subtle flavours too its so complex

I got engaged about a half mile from it

dunno if that tells you a story

.. but .. I found it a pretty plain flavour to start with .. and it was nice enough ... then 15 years later someone brought me a bottle as a house warming in the west highlands .. and to my credit... I looked interested

.. but then I put softer west highland water into the whisky, and it was one of the biggest changes of heart Ive ever had from a simple dram .. it totally transformed it .. and it taught me a simple fact that even after its made, if you do take water in it .. even a particular water can make a huge difference

Now there will be those that prefer 'with' or 'without'

lets have a debate ? what do you think gentlemen ?

I personally prefer it with .. I think it releases a lot more flavours

I've always hated whiskey. Everytime I've tasted the stuff it sent me recoiling with hairs on the back of my neck standing to attention.

Earlier this week a work mate brought in a bottle of Glayva. I tasted a small amount and really liked it. It says it's a blend of whiskey's and is a liqueur so not too sure if that measures up to what you guys think is a whiskey.

Andy you have just mentioned my favourite liqueur. You should try putting equal measures of G and a good malt and sit back and enjoy a Rusty Nail. You'll never look back.

Last bottle I had was Wild Turkey a nice little fruity number. the origin of whisky in Wales goes back 356AD, when the monks of Bardsey Island developed the art of distilling. musta been some big bang's back in the early years.

Well Andy theres an almost infinate blend of them on the liqueur side some infused with herbs , honey .. the list is endless and I enjoy many of them too .. like the auld favourites such as Drambui and there are a lot of blenders who specialise in this market only.. but they tend to be sweet a lot of the time .. those I prefer over ice.

I do realise that there are those that like and those that dont .. but.. if you are a haverer (auld scots for undecided) and if you want to try a proper malt, theres a sweet and gentle one called Dalwhinnie from just south of Inverness .. its noted as a favourite for those on the cusp

a little water and its a sweet bed time nip after a long day

My own favourite is Talisker from the Isle of Skye. Tastes even better when I'm on the beach at Talisker Bay. Slainte.

Whenever I want to recapture the magical peaty atmosphere of the Drovers , on the way over from Luss , I take a Lagavulin ! Perhaps not to every one's taste , but I'll be surprised if there isn't a bottle of the 16yo somewhere about the house this Christmas..............Cheers..........

Was at the boat show this year, and there was a stall selling Bowmans, Islay whiskey.

Wonderful stuff, I had the 15year old bottle. Very Very Nice

Now you're talking my friend! Mind you a lot of people don't like the after taste of the sea ie iodine! It is an acquired taste.
