Called in at the whisky shop in Vinopolis at Borough market this morning trying to find a bottle of "proper" 18yo macallan. Apparently it's all going to Asia & non is being released for Europe & when it is, they can charge 175 A bottle for it I was offered this to try & it's a stonker!! Very intense sherry, sweet & an unbelievably long raisin finish, possibly better than 18yo mac. & a third of the price, find it & try it

Well, for the sake of the group & without any regard for my own safety, I took the plunge tonight & opened the English Whisky...... & was pleasantly surprised. I was expecting a raw harsh spirit with little or no good points, what I got was a smooth, light dram (can we call English whisky a "dram"? if not, what? Tot, snifter, snort??) with vanilla & a hint of sweetness. Not much on the finish, but very round in the mouth, reminiscent of a lowland malt. Probably wouldn't be my first choice, but nowt wrong with it & a good effort.

Ah erm beggars and all that Steve. Nothing wrong with that bottle except it's still full. Didn't know you were a fan of Orkney's finest?
