The Marine Bill

Did you know only 3km2 or 0.002% of the UK waters are fully protected from damage and destruction?

The Marine Conservation Society is campaigning for a suite of Highly Protected Marine Reserves, sanctuaries for marine life from which NO natural resources can be extracted, and no developments can occur which damage marine life.

The graphic destruction of the UK’ marine habitats can be seen in a recent report by the BBC detailing the plight of Sea Fan coral in Lyme Bay.

If you would like to see our marine wildlife and habitats protected please support the MCS in their campaign..

Thank you

This is only the "tip of the iceberg". The type of trawling shown in the BBC video is used world-wide, including areas where traditional fishing for species such as cod is banned, and has been replaced by scraping the sea bed for crustaceans including scallops.

Have no fear Yo Bliar is here....so that'll mean nothing will be done. A lot of areas that are beam dredged have had it already. There are a lot of Scallop diving operators who can be very selective and dont damage the sea floor but your beam dredger fisherman wont change, its too much of a shift for them. Plus it means more bodies to pay.

Pretty shocking really. Only just seen the Video.
Why can't we react more quickly. Identify the affected areas, mark them and then Police them.
Your local Council should be able to do that without waiting for Blair and his cronies.
If the areas were maked with buoys you be able to see the offending fisherman and do something about it.
As it is seems everybody is blaming everybody else.

We are all to blame

Destructive fishing is a problem worldwide and has been for 3 decades. If there is a market then someone is going to satisfy it. Legally or illegally. The answer is don't buy it!!! Just like drugs. Many countries are starting campaigns to encourage people to buy only farmed fish, shrimp, scallops etc. The Government will never do anything about it, not because they do not want to but because they will not spend the money to enforce the rules. Farmed fish do not taste as good but???? So next time you go to the supermarket or the local chippy, think about it!!!! As for the livelyhood of fisherman: sorry tough sh*t, there is no market for matches, parrafin lamps, etc, etc, these days either, they need to move with the times as most of us have had to do. Sea fish farming is a quite developed technology and proven to be economical. Perhaps the Gov. could provide subsidies for consortiums of fisherman to set up sea farming. Just my opinion. However; in reality, nobody realy gives a sh*t so nothing will be done.

Hey, Codders, I bet your LR and RIB smell a little fishy too. How many cats do you have following you when you are towing?
