The Clemenceau arrivies in Teesside

Where do you stand on this?

Can the UK recycle the boat better than anybody else? If we can should we do it?

It's valuable jobs-and given the H&S culture we have here and the amount of attention it's received, I doubt there'll be any pollution as it'd never happen again if there was an incident.

I'm all for it, if France doesn't want to do it or can't then we might as well have the work, it creates jobs on Teesside.
We've still got the American ghost ships kicking around somewhere too!
If it was upto me personally I'd clear them of any hazardous susbstances then sink them and make some great dive and fishing sites!

TAG have just lost the contract for the Seadragon project which has cost the surrounding businesses alot. So the more work the UK gets the better.

They are getting paid £8.75 million to take it and its probably worth a million in pure scrap value on top of that.

Even after the labour costs, infrastructure, regulatory requirements they are going to be laughing!

Some serious money involved.

Thats what they thought with the American ships until the license to break them was pulled. What do you do with a few old battleships? They did get the license again but I think theres more to it in the politics side.

I think it's sad that the shipyard has to scrap, rather than build ships.
But business is business and I'm glad we've got it.

a) I "think" so
b) They're in the same drydock as Clemenceau, all going to be dismantled together.

The Glost ships were afloat and had booms around them incase of any spills from them.
If you go on google maps the ships are just below Seal Sands and to the right of Graythorp.

Don't they also disassemble oil rigs there too?

There's a steady revenue stream if I ever saw one.

The environmentalists are insane - they won't let anyone dispose of them properly so in the end they will rot into the sea and cause far more trouble.

Surely it's better for the environment to dispose of such things properly than to run it up onto a beach in India and let the scavengers do their work???

Asbestos is treated with way too much hysteria. As long as it's handled carefully it is fine.

Great news for the UK economy. One thing I find absolutely laughable is the criticism France took from the UK government when they had planned to have it dismantled by India (who at the time accepted to do the job). Especially as there was a UK ship that had been dismantled in India a few years before hand. I really really hope that the safety conditions are going to be high as I would hate it if someones health was put at risk so that some bugger can get rich.

Picture 15.

I think all the ships, including the Ghost ships are now inside the drydock.

Well the UK, especially the Clyde has a huge ship building history, so I dont see the big deal in pulling them apart again

It appears harder to pull them apart than build um.

Kind of a back handed compliment that we are adept at doing it.

I suppose we've been breaking ships for centuries anyway, normally illegally.

Good old Cornish wreckers.
