£150 or so for a cover for a 22' boat seems fair enough - so how the hell can people justify the quotes I have had for covers for my RIB - £800 up to £1400 - what a joke!!!

Not really related to boat covers.. The problem is that when people see you have a 8m+ rib, spanking new Suz.. 5 range rovers/ 2 astons/ 4 Landrovers/ workshop capabale of completely overhauling an RB 511.. they all think ah.. that gits got money.. we will have a bit.. so anything you ask for. you can bet your botttom dollar there is a factor of 4 built in somewhere..

I learnt sometime ago its best to be regarded as ,poor, miserable, stupid and
mean- nobody then will steal from you and above all there is no jealousy..

I use a Kia Sorento to tow the rib around-nobody envys you and I behave
like a miserable mean old git. In fact nobody ever nicks a Sorento..

I wish I had the Astons!!!

You may be right though - I really don't see the justification in the jump from about £200 to £1200 for a similar product.

A mate of mine has a haulage company so he's going to have a word with one of his suppliers about making up a cover for me out of lorry tarps.

The main problem is it's the sun I want to keep off the boat(if we ever get any again) and the hassle of using such a big cover in the summer is prob not worth it. Maybe I will get some made up to just drape over the tubes!!!

Codders try the fabric used on curtain sider trucks, it is easy to heat weld with a roller (the type you use for wallpaper edges) and a heat gun from B&Q for about £40-£50 practise on some off cuts first. you can get the fabric in many colours but you will need white.

Had the same problems.. Get some pvc sheeting, eyelets(plastic),bungee rope
( 7.5 mm in dimater), tie down plastic straps ) whole thing for the front half of the rib cost 40 euros.

The tie down is to the outer rubber flange that goes around the rib. You will need to drill small 8mm holes in this to attach the straps.Also the sheet should be made as tight as a ***** - so that when it rains the water flows off the cover.. The whole cover which is in two parts ( only the front one shown )cost about 70 euros + my labour. If you do it right you can leave the front one on and go out with it. Serves also as an additional support for the front tubes as the front of the cover is curled over and attached to the exterior hull anchor point. The rear of the cover is attached to the cabin , by means of a roller that you can wind up and clamp- so keeping it very tight.

PVC Codders. You don't need kelvar.. Stay off polyamide ( nylon ) and Polyester( both will rot) . The pvc you get now for tautliners is stabalized for ultra violet. Salt conditions ( at this point) have had no effect on the colour or strength.

Dont use polyethylene as you can't weld it.

Reminds me of a situation many years ago. My Dad drove a lovely Jag. (bit of a rarity over here...) and I had an old beater Toyota. In the same week, both ended up with seized wipers.
