Strimmer engine bogging

Hi,

My Makita strimmer is playing up. It starts and idles fine but when you give some throttle it smokes, bogs and dies. The plug is oily so it's running rich yet the carb has no visible adjustment for leaning it out...

What could be causing this, perhaps a blocked exhaust ?

Thx

try cleaning the air filter, blocked filters effectively choke the engine. on that you will probably find that its oily. we have issues with stihl saws - but of course they get blocked with dust.

Have a look at the condition of the carb diaphragm, I have a ryobi chainsaw that had the same problem.

As Glow said, the carb diaphragm can go hard over time especially if its not been run for a while sometimes soaking it in petrol & flexing it between your fingers sometimes cures it .
could also be a very small breather pipe / hole that's got blocked up too .

I'd also go for the air filter first (foam or paper?) then massaging/replacing the carb diaphragm.

Incorrect fast jet ajustment will cause this too, are you sure you don't have a screw for this? My Stihl strimmer does.

Still does it with air filter removed, can't see any adjustment screw for leaning it out...

If it's just started doing it, and it hasn't been messed with then dont mess with carb settings. It's either mucky jets/passages or diaphragm, or possibly a crank seal gone. Does it vibrate excessively?

My Stihl did that for a bit, I emptied the fuel, rinsed the tank and carb with neat fuel. Refilled with fresh premix. New plug and clean filter. And she was good again. No filter can be as bad as a dirty one. New plugs make a big difference. Keep an eye on the plug temperature requirements. Very important.
These little strokers operate in a high state of tune at WOT under full load, which is different to unloaded WOT. They are designed to do either full throttle at full load....... or idle. Tricky demands.

Make sure that your gardener is a "she".They're much better.
Avoid the ones with a "he" bit at the end.
So , no "she he"'s or "he she"'s, unless they do the gardening, and not up hill.
