I disagree with the above comments re 316 below waterline, 304 above.

Stainless shouldn't be used below the waterline as the lack of oxygen stops it from oxidising and self passivating. That said, it's not a major problem unless its something important like a seacock etc.

304 is most commonly used for kitchens and kitchenware. At work we wouldn't use 304 outdoors anywhere in Jersey as you're never more than a few miles from the sea, let alone on a boat!
