Tradition has it that St Patrick brought Christianity to Ireland, explained the concept of the Trinity using a Shamrock and drove snakes from the land. In all likelihood St Patrick was a Roman brought up in northern England - although there are indications that he could have been born in either Wales or Scotland. He is said to have first set foot in Ireland after being captured by Irish pirates at the age of 16.

You should have been in Chicago last weekend - you would think it was an American celebration - possibly more people wearing green on the streets of chicago last Sat that there will be in the whole of ireland this weekend. Noone can explain to me why they got the weekend wrong!

It is a bit of an international festival Polwart; a Welshman started it all by getting on the wrong boat in the Irish Sea (may be an ancestor of the great Rogue Wave himself!) but the Americans turned it into a big Fest.

Great weekend here too BTW. Men in kilts, Irish dancing, Irish Stew and Colcannon... oh and the Guinness : all in Pompey.

Oh and the Model Boat Race which was brill !

Even gArf is Oirish on St. Paddy's Day. When we went to the trouble of sending him a Happy Paddy's Day message he thanked us politely and said

'Hoo de fuk iz pady'

I've no idea what that means?

Hope the hosses did well at Cheltenham Sir Mark!
