Amazing photographs and the first decent images I've seen of the devastation.

Interesting to note a few 'it looks a bit deeper than last year' comments on the photographs, I wonder how regular flooding is here?

I can't help but feel truely miserable for those who have been flooded out of house and home - it must be absolutely awful. Makes me feel guilty sitting here in the dry knowing that all those poor people have months (years maybe) of sorting all this out.

Got a shock when I saw the photos of Windermere, put it into perspective of how much rain had actually fallen.

Stunning photos - yes it must be terrible to have your house invaded like that.

I wonder though how much of all this could have been either avoided or maybe the damage lessened?

All those bridges unsafe and on the point of collapse after standing for hundreds of years. I wonder when they were last inspected? When did you last see people repointing a bridge or even repainting one?

The bridges in our area are in a hell of a state - even major ones.

Also many people are being forced to stay away from their homes because it is "not safe" for them to return. A road strewn with debris is not always that dangerous. People managed in WW2 with far worse and also the poor buggers after various tidal waves.

A likely story.

The Briton Ferry bridge near Swansea carries a dual carriageway - it has been superceded by the new M4 flyover but it is still used a lot and is a major trunk route. It is getting in a hell of a state - what would have been just a lick of paint is now a major shot blast job or worse. There are special gantries under the bridge for inspection work - they have been closed for over 5 years as it is too dangerous to use them. If they treat major bridges like this what chance do smaller ones have?

It seems things like speed humps and traffic calming are far more important than routine maintainence!!!
