So basically you have to stay at home - maybe the people weren't that stupid after all - look at the map and you would never go anywhere!!!

during 1950s my old man was stationed on the raf base at Aden as a marine engineer with the air /sea rescue marine section using the fast high speed launches to rescue downed pilots or any sinking boats and just patroling the area in general ,he said piracy was rife then around the then somaliland and parts of the gulf of Aden ,, though in those days they used dhows ,,they never took hostages ,,mind ,, dead men tell no tales .

Small world - I was brought up around there - my father bought one of the old MTBs/rescue boats - sadly the main engines were knackered so he chucked some big diesels in - terrible!!!

The Yemeni people were lovely to us Brits - they really were - when we finally left the Russian moved in...........

He had to sit on a high seat between the engines ,,,,,bit noisy with just a small window to look out from ,,think he said most of the boats were built by Thonycroft with a few by Vosper and some had engines that were Naipier sea lion ,modifiyed aero engines ,,really bad starters ,,,until some one realised that they were using the wrong type of starter cartridge ,,,once running they were fine ,,think he said they would do around 40 knots .we have a spark plug from one in a box down in the celler, made partly from brass and there were gap less plugs out in those days, regards mart
