if you have a HD television, get Freesat, same as Freeview but with HD channels too...

Assuming you can get all available Freeview channels, you will at the moment get more channels on Freeview than the BBC / ITV Freesat.

Freeview has UKTV History, Dave, Virgin1, Five, Fiver, Five US
Freesat has BBC HD (a few hours per night), ITV HD (a very occasional program and no listings!).

Freesat will work with a Sky Digital dish

With no viewing card a Sky box should get the same channels as a Freesat box. You can buy a 'Freesatfromsky' card that will get you the Free to View (as opposed to Free to Air) channels like 5 etc.

Cheers

Chris

Wel I only get about 8 and when I enquired to have it converted to freeview they wanted a subscription for that, which I think is a total rip off given that I already pay them for a sky plus and a sky HD

I don't have Sky box, but there are about 200 FTA channels it can pickup. There is no subscription required, but you need to buy a viewing card.

Q: I already have Sky digital satellite equipment - what else do I need?
Quote:

A: All you need to gain access to the free channels available on the digital satellite platform is a Freesat from Sky viewing card, which costs just £20. If you’d like to access the interactive services available, you’ll also need a working phone line. To purchase a viewing card please phone Sky on 08448 244 400.
There is a also a faq here:
