Serious swell!

In the past three hours our wave recording equipment in the German Bight has shown an average significant wave height of 3.37 metres.

Worthy of attention however was the height of the highest 'total sea' recorded during the same three hour period (wave + swell) which was 13.18 metres.

You wouldn't want it on the beam.....

This is BIG waves!

This is where I launch in Donegal. The access road is rather steep and ends at the pier. Its not a great picture but you can just make out cars parked on the hill. The pier in the middle right is half covered by the high tide and the exit to the harbour is straight out west into those huge swells!

Anyone for a pint out on Tory?? Willk??

Draupner wave - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

No, it's not; it's our own recording equipment. What was noteworthy about last night was the difference between the average over the three hour period compared with the max recorded height. Also, the wind wasn't blowing its boots off at the time; this was the remnants of something that was generated many hours earlier, many miles away to the south west!

The Draupner wave is on a whole different scale but, interestingly, a similar percentage increase in the average value, set against the maximum.

I don't drink on Tory - I like to keep my wits about me out there. I don't like they way they look at ya. All thoughtful like...
