So, I guess I should have read some of this earlier.
On holiday with the family, got bored with all the beach stuff, so went off mountain biking. I had just cycled around the island of Spetses in the Peloponnes (Greece), when I jumped the bike off the ferry ramp having got back to the mainland, and thump the pedal came back and whacked my shin. I manfully said nowt, watched it bleed and thought all's well, that'll wash the nasties out.
Wrong. Three days later I limped into a Greek doctors surgery with a swollen leg and was given antibotics. Still on them now I am back in the UK, and now have a week off work to look forward to - bored already
Naturally, there is nothing wrong with my immune system (apart from being high mileage ), I blame those horrible Greek nasties

Just as well it wasn't Spain you had your accident. They'd have charged you 50 Euros for every bug that passed in to your body

Looks like oil related dermatitis to me. I've been the victim of it and it only gets worse.

Time to start using gloves.

You're right Nos, I suffer too. The legacy of having started in a workshop when I was a teenager and the old gents inferring that gloves were something worn by girls. Gits.

The parts wash was somewhere you rinsed your hands before ploughing them in to the sand bucket, prior to lunchtime sandwiches.

Fortunately my (much) younger brother (who's an MOT mechanic down the West Country) has seen my gnarled old claws and wears gloves every day. I'm very pleased about it.

As for the large chunk missing out of the top of my thumb, that I think Hightower was referring to, I have no idea how I did it!

I thought that was dermatitis too-it can get that bad that it'll split the skin right through.
