i thnk the "lightest" and easiest way to go is open office. try googlin "portable apps" and get the downloads for open office. way easy.... and you can have it on a memory stick or even copy paste to any pc. no installation needed

When I had open office, it didn't seem to work with MS office properly, always skewed when it came onto word, and funny fonts and spacing etc. I managed to get Works 08 free from Uni from being part of the Uni paper, and It's 10 times better than MS office!
