I think we have a "Don't ask, don't tell" policy.

I used to have a Westerly GK29. It was a great boat and I do miss it in some respects. However, Mrs GJ0KYZ hated sailing so that was the end of that I'm afraid.

We were mad sailors, dabbled with power boats but always went back to sail - then discovered RIBs and binned the rags for good.

I'm a sailor (beneteau oceanis 331,Osprey mk4) and a ribber too ,but you'll find a few unfriendlys to sailors on here !!
The call us wafis (wind assisted f**** idiots)
As far as I'm concerned a rib hasn't got the range of a yacht or anywhere to sleep when you get there whereas a rib is faster, easier to drive and park and bloody good fun.
So thats why I've got both. (and the rib is handy to help out when the dinghy falls over)

Kinda like the comparison between a small 4X4 and a large motorhome

I grew up sailing dinghies until it got to the stage where i wanted to do some cruising. Mum got scared I was going to be found floating face down in the channel so Dad bought a RIB...

Give me an open cruising dinghy with twin mast gaff rig and an iron centreboard and camping is a dream, but not a patch on wave jumping in a wind against tide force 6 in the weatern solent...

And yachts are the caravans of the sea..

I've tried to like sailing, I really have. After all, with fuel costs the way they are it makes a lot of sense. I even owned a sailing RIB for a while!

It really isn't my thing though. It's not just the speed, I'm happy enough in a kayak or displacement cruiser, but there's too much faffing around with sailing - and always heading in the wrong direction gets tiresome...

Our 32 foot motorsailer and rib combo give us the best of both worlds!!!!Can go anywhere in one or the other.Dont agree with the "yachts being caravans of the sea" comment.Never been stuck behind a yacht for miles and miles!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Keep a yacht at Craobh, quite often use both, use the yacht as accomodation and go diving off the rib, works well. I still get a big buzz from sailing, you might only be doing 8 knots but the forces being transferred through the boat are considerable, its quiet and I have a considerable stock of cold beer and G & T just metres away! Its nice to have the best of both worlds.

I don't think it is used as an unfriendly term on here - many of the people who use it are in fact partly from the dark side!

There are some similarities though - and many people use them as floating caravans...

Lifetime sailor in all sorts from Mirrors through National 12, Laser, RS600, 49er to eighteen foot skiffs. Love any race boat that goes fast but became very bored of it a flyers ago and decided to try another way to get on the water which is how we have a RIB. Plus it's much more sociable as mrs Portholme got very fed up with me loading the trailer and van and disappearing on Friday nights.

Get my race kicks elsewhere and my sea kicks from the RIB now

I am a RIB person First and been doing it for 20 years or so. Did the Day Skipper theory 15 years ago, really for enhancing my Nav Thoery on the RIB.

Then 3 years ago id the Day skipper practical. Managed to have a week in the Clyde in lovely Sunshine. I thought that was really good so have done some more.

My problem with sailing is the sails themselves. Its a black art that a lot of skippers don't seem to be able to put over.

Sailing gets you to places that a RIB really cant go to. I am looking forward to a trip along the outer hebrides. (one day)

Oh and any of you need some sailing crew, then let me know. (And I can bring my dive kit)

Gary

I have a Westerly sailing yacht in The Solent, and spend as much time as I can cruising on the south coast. But I also teach powerboating and work freelance as a commercial powerboat skipper Really enjoy both types of boating and would not give up either. Just being out on the water is great fun, power or sail doesn't matter, both have their own plus points.

But you all knew I was a sail locker WAFI anyway.
