A similar performance against any higher ranked side would've resulted in a loss. It was sloppy, error strewn and any game plan unraveled under the pressure of the Fijian defense.
The result flattered, but of course, we'll take it.

I'm not yet buying the hype surrounding 'Slammin' Sam. He's doing alright, but he's still got a way to go IMV, he has a tendency to take one yard too many and kill the phase . Billy Vunipola ran straight and hard and kept his head.
Wood and Launchbury went well.

That Nadolo fella is a lump.

A win with a bonus point is a win with a bonus point, but can't say it was a world beating performance...
That said you've got to balance winning without risking injuries and peaking too early in the first games - it will be interesting to see the quality of the other first games teams play.

Not sure all the interventions from TMO help the game-I think there's some refinement needed although the principle of an extra pair of eyes in the fast paced gamed of today is fine

Looking forward to te atmosphere at Kingsholm today

Put it this way, Wales and Aus won't too worried by that performance. Let's hope that first night nerves played a part.

I thought it pretty farcical when Jaco Peyper gave the Matawalu try, happened to look up at the big screen, thought 'hang on' and then had it reviewed and reversed.

Maybe anything other than a straight run in should be reviewed?

What's the mater with you lot?!
First Match..(of a long Campaign!) A win!..Max points and Move on!!
The first Match of a World Cup by the Hosts,at Home, with all the Hype and pressure was...always (regardless of opposition) IMO Not going to be much of a Barrometer.
In the 1966 Football World Cup opener we had a 0-0 draw....and all the Neh Sayers gave us No chance!!!
Didn't turn out too Bad!

As to Big Sam..Games against the Top Teams are usually won/turn on very small margins!and moments of Genius...obviously SB is not the "finished article"...but JUST maybe The England management!...see his potential (up close!)..and as one of those Rare those Game changing players? ...he ALSO brings a wealth of experience of high level pressure games AND tournaments...and more to the point..of WINNING them!.."Faint Heart never won Fair Maid!"......or F###k all else!
GO ENGLAND!

Home, hosts, hype are excuses which wouldn't wash in the southern hem.

'66! How about the major tournaments where the hosts have started poorly, continued poorly and been chucked out at the pool stages?

England will do OK, they have to. As the biggest and wealthiest playing nation in the World, it's demanded of them.
England's patchy 6N record over the past four years does not say to me that they are shoe ins for a place in the final. There are at least 6 sides in this tournament who could've annihilated England on last night's performance.
They will improve, it's just a matter of by how much and how quickly.

Being a fan and a realist can lead to a more satisfying conclusion.

Impressed by Georgia today - really entertaining match v. Tonga.

My last minute tickets were great - on the balcony of the 1873 suite in corporate-box land just between the 20m and tryline where all the 2nd half action was.

Even better at half time free pasties were served inside (not Mollers best, but not Ginsters either)

Now a Georgia fan as long as they don't meet England (that would be in the semis I think so unlikely)

So your preddiction....."England will do OK"
Very Brave!..Sure your English!??

As to how we ultimately do in the Tournament Only Time will tell!!! Although I don't share you're obvious pessimism...even defeatist attitude.
Wouldn't have done any good in 1940...let alone 1966!!
...but if you want to be down beat go right ahead!..seems your default setting anyway!
Personally I enjoy all aspects of the Four yearly RWC and the high profile Rugby gets..At home more so...I also like to see England Win on ALL occasions...as indeed I do all the Home Nations!..with obvious exceptions
You should try lightening up and enjoy the event!
