River Licence

Has any one bought a short term river licence if so was there an easier way than filling out the Environment Agency form weeks in advance?

You can do it online. I usually buy a day pass for the River Ouse at York and print the pass straight off. I think you can do that for longer term. You will need your insurance details and safety certificate (if you need one) handy.

Hi thanks I could not see on there web pages that they do it online for the East Anglian region very handy if they do,
Re boat safety cert am I right in thinking you can self cert if it's a rib
ie open boat and no cooker ?

Don't suppose you have any advice on insurance
I will need to insure two boats next year 4m rib that sits in the garage and 2.6 inflatable
I was going to see if I can get a policy that includes both I am only after 3rd party,
I think the insurance on the inflatable will cost more than the boat is worth! Lol

When I had a hard boat I also had a 2.4 mtr sib tender. some insurance companys will cover a tender to the main craft.......

I'm with Bishop Skinner and they will cover several boats on one policy.

Have to do it by phone though.

The licences are on the British Waterways website. If you are an open boat/rib with single outboard, no safety cert required.

Hi thanks unfortunately all the rivers on the now ' canal river trust'
All appear out to the west,
I am after the great ouse in Cambridgeshire,
I will call the environment agency who manage it next week to see if I can get daily licences over the phone rather than posting it off,

Today I see one of there boats on the river looks more like old Bill with there Battenberg livery!

Not that I would go on the river with out a licence😜

Be interesting to see how you get on. Huntingdon slip is our local river access and when I last enquired the short term licences were only allowed for boats on transit through/on the system that already had a full licence elsewhere.

They wouldn't allow me to buy a daily/weekly/monthly licence to use as and when it suited.

I had a feeling that that may be the case! Gutted if it still is as I live 300 yards from the river and I want to use my inflatable on the river and occasionally via a slip at a marina the rib but I really don't want to pay £270 for a river licence for the rib where I will only use that on the river a few times in a year, I suppose I could get away with getting a river licence for the rib and using the 3.5 hp aux outboard instead of the 40hp saving me £200 on the licence,
Therefor having the 40 as a axillary lol

I've kept a mid 80s Mariner 4hp just for the river licence issue. With that it's £77 but if I only had the 15hp it's £275 which is stupid because assuming you keep to the speed limits there is no material difference to the river or its authority between the two engine sizes.

Paperwork/paperwork. It's a global phenomena. A friend of mine emigrated to Australia and took his ex MOD 9.9 mariner with him. He went to register his 3.5m sib and because the engine did not have a serial number (being ex MOD) it was confiscated and he got a bill of 450AD for the survey. He bought a 15 yam to replace it and then was pulled over in the harbour by marine police and issued with a written warning for not displaying the licence. No much wonder the police can't catch criminals when almost anything is a crime these days!

He also had to pay to get his PBL2 certificate transferred to the Australian version. Mind you he is boating upside down!!

Well just spoke to the Environment Agency and Also Denver lock
And both have said I can buy just a visitor licence!
So good news £8.50 for 7 days

Oh that's interesting and a great help to me. I've just phoned to clarify a few points and it is as on this chart with, as you say, no need to be registered elsewhere to get the visitor licence...

With my 340 Zodiac I'm in tariff class 30 (with 4hp) or 33 (15hp) on that chart so regardless of using the 4hp or 15hp it is £8.50 for a day. They say the easiest way is to phone them and pay by card then they'll send an email with the registration permission which you can print out or carry on a smartphone to show if asked. The only nuisance is you have to nominate the day so you can't phone on a Friday then decide on Sat or Sun depending on which looks best for the weather.

If I go for a 7 day licence this is still £8.50 for the 4hp but jumps to £17.24 for the 15hp. Again you have to state the dates the 7 days cover and they have to be consecutive not spaced over several weeks/months so actually the 7 day is no advantage to me.

The daily rate will suit me as I like to give any new to me or recently major serviced outboard or boat outfit a "proving" run on the river (which is only 15mins from our house to the slipway) before going for the near 200ml round trip and full day out to the coast. Also the Mrs likes a drift down to the riverside eatery a few days a year and the daily rate is ideal for this.

It also means now I don't have to keep the 4hp just to reduce the yearly river rate by £200 I can sell that and reduce the garage clutter by one more thing.

So many thanks for checking that out Popeye otherwise I'd have continued to believe what I was told last year.

Yep Fenlander I am quite happy with that also!
My mistake it's not £8.50 for a 7 day for my Rib,
But that works out perfect for me I will get a river licence for a year for the sib and daily for the Rib
Happy days

Next to try and get a deal on insuring both boats
