The volume switch was playing up on mine. I gave it to an audio/electronics whizz who I know, when he opened it up, a fair bit of the soldering on the PCB was either missing or had gone dry. He said that it was a known problem with REL subs. It maybe worth whipping the back panel off and having a gander. After some 'iron' work, mine is like a new'un now.

Ahh OK... thanks for the heads up. I think mine's about ten years old... one of the newest bits of my hi-fi which is 70s, 80s and 2000s equipment. Dry joints are a constant possibility on this old gear.

Do you use yours for cinema or stereo?

Mine's on the steroid.

My audio whizz pal is putting together a speaker bonded in to a 4" soil pipe affair to fit behind a kick board in the kitchen to provide some oomph out there. It's all about the wavelength apparently.

Unfortunately Mr Kennett doesn't allow me to reply - you'll just have to put it on my tab as written.

Go on, a ban is a good excuse to get some work done.

Probably true. My cousin in the next town is an electronics engineer, vintage audio restorer and musician with a studio. He is very quick to dispel most claims of the hi-fi world as smoke and mirrors.... he builds similar stuff from pipes, wood, wadding, speakers and home made amps.

The RELs are amazing bits of kit but probably only running at about 5% most of the time in a household environment.
