just to get back on thread, i just love the cayenne, i think it looks superb and would love to drive one as they are supposed to be very quick and handle superbly. I want one but probably too tight to part with the cash for the amount i would get to use it. never mind i can still dream

I agree, the Cayenne is a fat arsed mother. Es wants one. It's a 200 mile round trip to service the silly looking thing. Not for me. The X5 is soppy enough, those things are boxters on steroids! Incidently, Es's b in law had a RR sport last month and has just chucked it back at our local LR dealer claiming it to be rubbish and has bought an X5 instead.

Funny, every time I've seen a Cayenne on the road it's been driven like a complete wanker-and I've seen quite a few. Being tarred with that brush would be enough to put me off I'm afraid.

As "a complete wanker" I have to tell you that the Turbo is one of the best all round cars I have ever owned. Brilliant both on and off road (far better than a Range Rover, 'bout the same as a G Wagon), handles well, goes like a train, loads of fun, services intervals 18k miles

Are we refering to the drive as being " off road"? No way is a Cayenne a serious off roader! Our X5 is pretty close to the Cayenne in terms of 4x4 sophistication and it's hopeless in slippery situations, mainly due to the tyres. Unless you put some serious off road rubber on these cars, they'll never cut the mustard off road. If you do you'll wreck it's on road capabilities. The Cayenne like the X5 is a great family on road towing tool, not quite my cup of tea,but I'm sure that you love it.

is it fair to critisisisisiisiisiise a car because of the tyres it has for road use, i would expect that if you put decent off road tyres on an x5 a cayenne or a td5 it would be much better than with stock road tyres and probably would perform reasonably well. We are all aware that landys are fairly good off road but on road where most of us do the miles i would have a cayenne/x5 anyday, and before anyone says i do have a td5.

Someone test drove a cayenne from our local dealer and took it off-roading. It caused £15,000 damage to the underside.
You can't compare this new breed of monocoque Chelsea Tractor with nanny-state electronic 4x4 with a proper chassis based 4x4 vehicle like a Landy or a 4trak-whatever tyres they have on. They just aint designed to survive the same kind of hard knocks. Just look at the recent ad campaign for the vw 4x4 'boasting' about its wading depth (incidentally the fish in the grille was higher than it could wade)...My old 1985 4trak went deeper with no snorkel kit and it could drive out afterwards...which I doubt any 'new breed' 4x4 could do.

If you're going to buy something for road miles I have a new concept for you guys...it's called a CAR...For the price of a Cayenne you can buy a one of these AND have change for a proper 4x4 for towing...

By the way Jellis, are you admitting to driving like a complete wanker or are you just assuming I think you're one?

As an owner of a "Chelsea Tractor" and therefore a partial wanker, I agree with nos. These things are not designed for serious off-road work regardless of tyres. Why would you want to smash one through a river anyway? Unless you're a lottery winning ex-drug dealer. Buy a series 2 and stick a V8 in it, which would be similar money to a service on the Cayenne.

Don't get me wrong Mollulnan, I think there IS a place for Chelsea Tractors.They make fantastic tow vehicles for caravans etc where limited 4x4 capabilities are a necessity and most are good 7 seaters too. I just don't think it's the reason very many people actually buy one.

Just looked at the new price for a cayenne-£68950....nah....You can buy a well-specced S-type Jag (£30k)and a brand new Discovery (£28k)and still have enough change for a new 6m RIB...

BTW-are you admitting to driving like a wanker 'sometimes'?

cayenne

took a cayenne turbo out today for a test drive from my nearest opc just out of curiosity - looks are a bit iffy, but if you can live with this, it's unbelievable - quicker round a track than a bmw m3, fits loads of kit in it and will tow ribs as large as codder's...although at £77k it should do really...
