Popups and web redirects

Anyone guide me towards a good program/s that can eliminate popups, web redirects and browser hijacking? A good friend of mine is having major problems and is just about to do a reinstall and format as a last resort.

I find malwarebytes.org software to work well. It gets rid of most bad things and it's free. It will detect but not always remove root kits. I use comodo cleaning essentials for that, CCE. you can run them in safe mode to start if you have issues. Run them each several times until it comes up clean. Disconnect the computer from the Internet after you download and update for the cleaning.

Cheers BigTallJV (how tall are you BTW) I'm going to see him in a day or so and will run your two suggestion.

I've run these on my machine today and it's surprising what it finds even though you think you've got nothing wrong.

Adblock plus addin works great - I live in an adfeee world !

this is preventive measure will not remove

Yes, I run ABP nice bit of kit.

My mate got his computer back to normal. Didn't have a chance of using the programs recommended by BigTallJV as his brother-in-laws 21year old Son called around and managed to sort it out. Don't know what the problem was, but I've asked Steve to find out for me just out of interest.
