Plasma or LCD?

Anyone clued up on tv's?

Im looking to buy a 37" tv, but unsure whether to go for a plasma or a LCD. I bought a mag about them, but this still doesnt really clear things up. If anyone can help point me in the right direction or let me know of a forum for this kind of thing then it would be much appreciated.

Why exactly do you want a Plasma or LCD???

If you REALLY need something thin to hang on a wall fair enough but remember something like a Sony 36" widescreen 100hz CRT will give you far better picture quality. Prices have come down so much - probably less than £500 if you shop around. They DO take up a lot of space though - quite deep at the back but the screen IS ultra flat!!!

As the technology is changing so fast I would be very wary about forking out a few grand on anything at the moment.

As far as Plasma is concerned never been that impressed and they don't have a long life. For LEDs what you want are the new OLEDs - much better.

The technology to have though is the new carbon nano tube screen - works like a CRT but is ultra thin. SED and FED are the words to look for.

Recently bought a Samsung 40" and a 26" LCD and very happy with them - Plasma isn't worth it in my opinion - the 40" is the same one as in the advert by the way!

I've just looked into this before buying my new TV; plasma and LCD both have their pros and cons. They both offer larger screen sizes and take up less space than smaller CRT TVs, and, if you watch a decent source, offer fantastic picture quality. Make sure you buy one with the HD Ready logo as Sky start broadcasting in HD in February and hopefully others will follow suit.

Which one you go for is down to personal preference, look in the stores at what is available - though it was difficult finding stores that could demonstrate them properly with a decent source. I went for LCD as I was worried about screen burn with plasma and am very pleased with my Sony.


An interesting forum is http://www.avforums.com/forums/index.php which is very comprehensive and has all the info you can shake a stick at - if you've got the time to search through it.

With the exception of John Lewis check how much the extended warrantee is going to cost, it’s more expensive on the plasma TV’s than it is on the LCD TV’s.
That alone tells me something about the reliability of plasma!

Both plasma or LCD is good, but with a plasma, you need to fill it up with gas after a few years, it could be expensive. With LCD you just use it as much as you like.
