Paypal can someone explain

I've got a nagging doutd, I've just sold a radio on PayPal, the guy ask questions and seems genuine, he's paid by PayPal and as he works in the states can I send it to his brother, his brother has a different surname, right the question, as he's paid by PayPal and if its a scam can they claw back the money once I have it in my account, I stand to lose the radio and money at that rate, I still have the radio at the moment

Hi Biffer

My understanding is that you need to ensure its sent to their registered and confirmed PayPal address. That way your covered. However if it's not sent recorded delivery then they still have a bloody loophole they can abuse. Trouble is to send stuff overseas recorded is an absolute fortune. I've managed to find this explanation on sending overseas etc http://www.ebay.co.uk/gds/Beware-of-...1380265/g.html

Found it.

It's under the seller protection bit.

Hope that helps

PayPal can freeze your account or take money from it pretty much as they please. I use them because it's generally a brilliant service, and very convenient. I don't trust them though, and have no faith in them resolving a dispute sensibly.

If you send the radio anywhere than the registered Paypal address then you are open to being ripped off. If it is an eBay sale and you have a message via the eBay contact system with the details of where he wants it sent, that might give you some protection (but I wouldn't like to rely on it).

What's your gut feeling? Does the guy sound genuine? Is it eBay or did he find you somewhere else? Can his brother pay you from his own account which is linked to the delivery address? Can you afford to take the hit if it goes wrong?

To be clear. He's paid but it's being delivered to someone else's address here in uk. It's been paid for and I can send it recorded. Where can I come unstuck

He can say that his paypal account was hacked or used illegitimately & he has no knowledge of the transaction or the addressee. It's not his address & he could deny receiving the goods. It sounds fishy to me. Tell him you'll hang on to it until he gets back from the states & will only send it to the registered paypal address.

If he has paid and the delivery address is shown on your paypal details then I can't see a problem.

If this is not the case then I would be wary.

Paypal tend to side with the buyer. There will be a 'registered' address (or verified address) on the paypal account, which if you don't send to you loose all YOUR protection as the others are saying.

There are various scams, but imagine if he has hacked / stolen someone's account or card details. He (or someone acting with him) will receive the radio and then Paypal will discover the stolen account/card and claim back from you.

If he is legit, he should be able to change the verified address I think (although it might be a problem to do internationally).

Whenever I'm asked me to send to a different address I get them to put the alternative address in the note box when they make the payment.

I've emailed him on a proper email address and have ask him to confirm that he wants me to send the radio he's paid for to his brothers address, I pointed out the I need to be careful as its not his registered pal pay address and his brother has a different surname so please confirm this is correct, lets seen what the response will be

Biff, make ALL communication through Ebay if there is a problem they can look at all Wcorrespondance. we NEVER communicate outside of Ebay, this has been a big assest on three occasions, where we have had problems and the outcome has been in our favour.

Sure there's a good answer to this question.

Why not just have them do a direct bank transfer into your account? Why use paypal at all?

Would you blind transfer to a private seller in another country ? That's why PayPal is used!

From a selling point of view its easy to cover yourself. Only send it by trackable delivery to the registered PayPal address on the PayPal receipt. Also make sure its a verified address. Do not provide PayPal with the tracking until after you've confirmed it's been traced (buyer will see if its not been processed correctly and will try a chargeback)

Finally make sure you log into PayPal (using your own link, not one found on an email or receipt etc) to check the funds have cleared.

If you do that, your covered for not received claims, "as described" claims is a whole different ball game....

If it's through ebay he shouldn't have a problem temporarily changing his address ! We were on holiday on Kintyre for a couple of weeks and I ordered stuff to be sent to our holiday camp. Changed it back when we got home.... No issues and easily done !

Ah, ok. It's more to protect the purchaser then.

Absolutely correct!
You will potentially lose if you do not follow this advice. I've been there and learnt the hard way. Also be aware that the PayPal resolution service is a machine that makes the decision based on these rules not an individual reading a hard luck story (despite what they say) as long as you play the game and send a reply, any reply, then the other side needs to respond until the buyer gets the option to close the dispute and if the say they havent had the stuff at that point then the funds are instantly removed from your account. Up until then they are frozen and you cannot do a thing about it. You then get an email saying that PayPal have carefully read through the messages and decided on the appropriate action, bo110cks!

If your gut feeling is telling you there is something wrong, then you should probably not complete the deal, Have you tried emailing paypal and ask their advice.

Personally, I would not do it !!
