Ouch!

Had a nice suprise on Saturday in the form of a demand from HM Revenue and Customs for £4000 due to an overpayment of tax credits which happened some 6 years ago.

I was aware back in 2003 of the F**K UP they had made, but as they couldn't decide what they had overpaid (about 5 different demands)....unbelievable but true, it was put in to dispute.

So after 6 years they are going to recover the money. Naturally i am pi*s*d off, but why has it taken so long? I am not trying to dodge paying what i owe but as i am no longer married, i am concerned that if my ex wife is not in the position to pay, will they expect me to honour the whole amount?

It really hacks me off, that like the majority of you - I pay my taxes and try to pay my way unlike the scrounging CHAV scumbags in this country that have never worked in their lives and get evertyhing paid for them, and would probably get away with this.

Anyone else had dealings with these INCOMPETENT F*** WITS or can offer advice?

Sadly, my experience is that if the taxman cocks up your tax and you get paid money you are not entitled to, then, he can ask for it back and, by virtue of the law, can demand you to pay it back quickly (28 days I think I was given but I'll stand correcting) as you shouldn't have had the money in the first place.

When I rang them to 'discuss' (code for negotiate) they were very pleasant and explained everything very clearly, but, it didn't change anything and poverty or an inability to pay wasn't acceptable

On a more positive note about the taxman, they've clearly all been on customer relationship courses in the past few years. They're actually pleasant to talk to and come across as knowlegeable and human

You can arrange to pay a set amount off every month. Best bet is to ring them and sort something out as they don't mess about.

This really p*sses me off. Although very helpful and nice when you phone and ask for help, HMRC make everything so ridiculously complicated it isn't even funny. If they do calculations, they should get them 100% correct first time without fail and if they get them wrong its their own fault. In my opinion there is no excuse for balls ups like this and it angers me they can come back 6 years later and demand the money back. My lack of trust and confidence in HMRC means that I can basically never use money from any rebates I receive (like the £900 I got in January for only working part of the tax year) due to the constant fear that one day they will demand it back! Its disgusting.

Another thing that gets my goat is that HMRC hold on to my monthly student loan re-payments until the end of the tax year and then pay it off to the loans company. Why should they be allowed to do this? I'm loosing out on not having the money, they are gaining from having it and all the time the interest is accumulating on my remaining loan amount!

Bargain, what I'll do is pick the RIB up and then pay the 800 monthly installments to the tax man?

I had a little bill for £125 paid it then got another saying I owed £6 interest, rang up and paid that too and asked why it was added to the original, oh we must have forgot!

What is annoying is getting penalties for unpaid bills when I work out of the country.

The revenue are very amenable at the moment in allowing you to 'pay up' any demands, and what they charge in interest, is cheaper than any bank at the moment, so I'd use that facility to good effect. If you can get a professional adviser, they may be able to mitigate the revenues claim, but then you'd have to consider the cost of employing them to do so. If you have to pay it , dont send them post dated cheques, last time I did that they cashed them at the same time .. how about that ? .. when queried, they and the bank said it was 'just' an error .. yeah right . Also .. Ive noticed that when I send a cheque to customs or revenue, it clears from my bank instantly

all of a sudden the mysterious bank clearing system operates without any delay what so ever !!
