Grisoft - not so bad...

In codders defence (not words you'll find very often here). I'm not going to comment on the ethics of linking direct to a *.exe rather than an *.html page - but since its so easy to register a domain name then it doesn't really matter if its a .com or .cz tld - it could still be dody.

However my point is that Codders advice was actually good:

The grisoft virus checker is very good. I have used the free version at home and both the single user and server versions at work with significant success. The "paid" versions come with support which is actually surprisingly good for a low cost option.

Anti-virus idea

Depending on what AV system your employer uses (assuming it's not your company) you may find that 'home' licenses are included foc. I know that Sophos offer this - and you get online updates with the enterprise license. Just need to get either a remote connection to your server or extract the account/password from your system adminstrator.

You can also download a current demo version from their website. (Guess you can do this as many times as you have email addresses assuming they don't IP check?)

. . . and not a .cz in sight!

And what is so bad about a .cz??? No worse than a .tw and that is where most of the drivers come from!!!

We have found that AVG actually outperforms even constantly uprated full corperate versions of the other main virus checkers - stuff Sophos and Symantec have let in!!!

Thanks for your responses as there was little data on my laptop and having backups I decided to reload Windows however before doing this I clicked on Codders link and it worked fine then reloaded windows reinstalled everything and loaded AVG from the website exactly the same download. checked laptop with Norton and AVG and they both say no virus present so I guess I'm ok till the next time.

Codders how about coming up Norfff on 15/16th October NW Ribsters cruise to Barmouth and Port Meirion.

Cheers

Fred

Would love to - I SHOULD have my boat by then - they are now starting to push ME!!!

Trouble is I don't even have time to pi** at the moment - 4 days off when I go to Guernsey will be such a luxury!!!

Also as most people in Wales will know - London is often easier to get to than North Wales from the South!!!

If you ever fancy coming down South though you will be welcome.

It IS a stunning area for boating - loads of rivers to explore and of course the famous "bitches" and Ramsay Island routes.

Also a wildlife paradise - 2000 dolphins in one go!!!
