On Top of the World

Well are we? Is there a Top and Bottom of our planet Earth?

And while I'm on such a philosophical subject.

What's on the outside of the Universe?

We are very near the top - further North than most of the USA excluding Alaska. Scotland is as far North as the tip of Greenland!!!

As to what's outside the Universe only God would know that!!! And yes there MUST be a God because it's all barking anyway - we don't really exist and shouldn't exist - just not logical so we may as well just start counting sheep and sticking pencils up our noses and shouting wibble.....

I think Hightower's question may be more philasophical than that. We are near to one pole (which we call North) - but the issue is when/why did the convention arise that North is up/top?

Is it just that in our empire building days we dominated and were in the "north" so that became the top. If by chance the aussies had been the "centre of the world" in the early days of navigation would the UK be described as down under - and all globes made upside down?

Or am I confusing the issue.

Yes totally - it's all about the way the planet is inclined as we go around the sun.

Of course the whole Universe could be the wrong way around!!!

Actually a long, long, long time ago there was a guy named North, Richard North, they used to call him Dick for short, and he loved to... well, how can I put this.. he had a girlfriend.. and he loved to.. and North just generally ended up top, and the rest is History....
There was also a guy named West, who the expression "go west young man, go west" was coined after, but that's another story...

But (and I could be wrong here as I haven't put too much thought into this) - isn't that just because conventionally we describe the earth/rotation about the sun in a particular way. If we went back in time and redefined those conventions such that the typical globe had new zealand and the antartic etc at the "top" and europe and canada at the "bottom" would that actually be wrong?

Must be why the sea is quite deep here?

Somewhere or other I have a photo of the Falklands clearly shown as being right on top, but I can't lay my hands on it right now

Remember also which way a compass points which was prob the first reason of all they decided which way was up!!!
