New car registrations

I have a five pound bet with my father regarding the year in which the DVLA started having two new registations a year instead of one. Can anyone tell me the year or the reg when it started?

the new scheme kicked in from 2001 when plates went from Y to 51 then 2002 went from 02 to 52 (i think!)

before that I think 99 was when the dvla started issuing 2 a year with t being early 99 and w being late 99

aug 98-99 when the s regs change to 2 a year, 99 was the first year with two regs a year

It all kicked off in 1999 on the "T" ,then in Aug.2001 we went to the "51" plate .Categoric,look how I make my livin'

99 year was the first year we had 3 reg letters per year (2 new Reg letters)
S plate to end Feb,, T plate March to end Aug 99 and V plate Sept 99

Then in 2000, we had V, W, X
2001 was then X, Y, and 51 and so on
