As amusing as it is to hear grown men debate the finer points of 'blowing' things...., the real reason why so much smoke was bilowing out of the Sallie Knutsen's funnel was down to a failed combustion controller for one of her auxiliary boilers. The boiler in question was being used to drive two of her turbo cargo pumps when unfortunately the unit responable for ensure correct air/fuel ratio failed resulting in a hugh increase of fuel being admitted to the boiler's burners. It took a while to sort the problem out which obviously caused quite some concern in and around the Solent.

Dont think a ship that still 'soot blows' (ie; a steam powered vessel) has come into Fawley for about 17years now!... (your showing your age Courageous )

The incident did cause some concern amongst those that know though since another sympton of bilowing black smoke like we saw on Friday is an uptake fire....this can potentialy have disastrous consequences leading to the total loss of the vessel.

Hmmm..... we soot blew on our diesel boats once a week, so it's not an exclusively steamy only practice Anchorhandler. Black smoke could be any fuelling issue really as this evidently actually was. You are however right, age is starting to be an issue for me unlike the colleague of mine who must have run off with Whelk's dog at some stage
