Dan, I'm afraid that in certain aspects of life you must realise that there is so much more to consider than getting what you perceive to be the 'deal' of the century. You know damn well, in your heart of hearts, that you want the Land Rover but you're desperately trying to justify to yourself the purchase of that tasteless, gawdy, glitzy, classless piece of Japanese junk that every drug dealer south of Glasgow wants to get his hands on. The fact that you've even started a thread about it immediately indicates to me your true feelings on the subject. And whilst you may save a few quid now, every time you see a Defender on the road you'll wish you'd bought one.
You're just hoping against hope that Ribnet forum members will dissuade you against the Landie by citing the predictable catalogue of breakdowns you're going to incur and how much more comfortable the Mitsubishi will be. Largely irrelevant due to a comprehensive warranty, and anyway thousands of Defender owners (cf. Chrisallse and my own brother) have had absolutely no problems whatsoever with their new LR's. You've got to keep this vehicle for some 3 years so stop p*ssing about and get the one you want, the 110.
What do Landys have in common with chocolate, they are soft, as are their parts.Might I remind you of a survey I read most unreilable car was a Disco, second was Freelander, why will the Defender be any different.In Ireland Rover have a terrible name, Defenders have one big weakness their gearbox, I personally know of a friend who has terrible trouble with his. I'm not talking about a Discovery or Freelander...it's the Defender I am recommending!
Our first Defender did 150,000 miles ..... no gearbox problems, latest Defender 95,000 miles.... no gearbox problems... what was it you said "Landrovers have a weakness for Gearbox problems", there are none here!
So I stick to what I say "Get a life... get a Defender"
Dan, the defender is a good car and looks the tits but it all depends how many miles you do and how much time you spend on the motorway. Do you really want to sit on the motorway at 70mph with that TD 5 motor it would be like listening to a Johnson dealer!

Hmm interesting one. ADS's point is very valid IMHO, How many miles do you do and are many motorway. A Defender for everyday use on motorways is for the enthusiast only. (LR enthusiasts are all masochistic yer know. ) The Mitsi will be much more comfortable, faster and frankly who wants to live without A/C these days?!
The Defender will be OK build qualitywise which is to say it'll be pretty crap by modern standards, or well, even probably 1970's standards. But then part of the character is getting deafened by the noise, dripped on it the rain and suffering from Landrover elbow caused by the fact that the drivers seat is SO far over to the right! Probably more reliable than a Freeloader and Disco. Rangie in different league of course. Defender probably the only LR I'd buy. But only as a second car.
And before the "Falcon owners club" start ranting on at me as to whether I've ever driven a LandRover, the answer is Yes thanks (72 SIII SWB & 2 Disco's). Oh yes and I used to work there.
Suspect though this is a heart vs head conundrum for you. And I think that the heart will win out. I mean you're not DanTd5 for nothing are you?!

its catch 22 very pleased with the L200 but its not a landrover
problem with the landrover its not as well build as the l200
its speed and comfort reliabilty over the name and standing of the landrover
prouduct
all so the wife just pointed out the canvas cover with the nice windows
not a good place to put any think so all item will have to be carryed in the cab not so good takeing tools boat bit fuel cans out each time i park
the l200 as a alloy cover with a lock
alan its a nice choice to have to make and its not my money but its a bit of a reward for working so hard its part my company only four share holders
if i go for the warrior i will end up buying a disco in time i would go for the ES
a 2002 model had the 92/97/98 years 200tdi and 300tdi and a 99TD5
