A container has been washed up on a Gower beach with "dangerous" chemicals in it. The public are being told to stay away.

This comment is what made me take notice.......

"The exact location is not being released at present to protect public safety."

No mention of where it's come from or anything else - how can you avoid it if you don't know where it is???

Quite easily I should think. If you're on one of the Gower beaches and you see a shipping container, then keep clear of it. What could possibly be difficult or confusing about that?

You know very well that if they publicise the location the likelihood is that a lot of people will deliberately go to have a look which might just be counter productive.

It may not actually be a shipping container. Could just be a barrel/can/IBC.

Cod - I would expect the local CG team are monitorring it and if it disappears at the next high tide they will make securite broadcasts. if it is not somewhere particularly accessible how would you check it is still there before you go out. (And if it disappears one day - how would you know if it was washed out to sea or taken ashore for safe disposal). Unless they know this is the only one container missing then you would be wise to keep your eyes peeled for others anyway!

I remember a report on the local radio a few weeks ago thet the royal navy had located one of two large tanks of acetic acid that had been lost in the Irish sea .
Maybe this was the other one ??

I wonder if it wasn't lost from the container ship off the Scillies (the one the injured captain was airlifted off). The BBC pics of the ship looked like it had lost a few.

I would have thought it was bit soon for a container lost off Scilly to turn up in Wales

Heard an interview with a CG chap on the radio this am which revealed that another 'tanktainer' from the same ship had been washed up on North Devon. Apparently the contents can be an eye irritant, but no more harmful than that.
