Lpg conversion. your views

thinking of converting the jeep 3.7 to lpg. any one running a vehicle on it, and if so would be gratefull for your views.

I knew someone who got a converted Rangy, he eventually chucked it due to lack of mileage range, lack of supply pumps, and it was a bit thirstier with less grunt, and thats without him paying for the conversion either !

I think you need to do the sums carefully

This a Jeep Cherokee 6 cyl? I'm curious what mpg are you getting? I ran one here in Canada and got arounbd 13-14mpg. So I converted by trading it for a diesel!

I almost bought an LPG Range Rover. The main reasons for not doing so was the lack of LPG pumps (the nearest one to me is 10 mile away) and the increased risk of something going wrong with it.

I bought a Diesel Grande Cherokee 2.7. I get 29 MPG around town, about 34 on a motorway and 25-26 when towing the RIB (mostly motorway).

If my company did not pay my fuel then I would get a 1000 Litre container of bio diesel delivered.

So, do the math on having LPG installed against trading in for a diesel, dont forget to add in the petrol use for when you can not get LPG.

pretty much as i thought, conversion cost would be just over 2 grand and the price of lpg is starting to rise slowly, im returning 20-22 mpg on a run towing the rib. which compared to some of the 4x4 diesels out there isnt that bad. and as i only need to have a 4x4 to tow the rib then i might be better of using the 2 grand to another 4x4.

yes alan its the v6 3.7 probably badged as the liberty in canada. apparently the 2.8 diesel isnt that much different on fuel according to the local jeep
rep.but i return 20-22 mpg towing on a run. but less around town.

Yes I am, have been running my 3.5 Defender on it for 4 years now, It still has the option to run on petrol at the flick of a switch but its on gas 99 percent of the time. A modern conversion shouldn't give any noticable performance loss if done well but there will be a slight loss in overall mpg.
That said I bought the vehicle with the conversion done and my lpg station is only a mile away. Think I'm paying 45p litre.

Hello all,

Holland is one of the country's of LPG. Look at the www.Jeepclub.nl site and their forum and ask there the question. Here in Holland the goverment also knows how to steal money from the fuel. LPG also rising sky high. (+/-€0,55cnt a Ltr)
Be careful With the installations, get proper info from them, also from dealer.

I know because a friend of my was one of the test pilots with a Grand Cherokee 1998 mod v8 5.9 (direct injection lpg ) That model wouldn't run on LPG without giving error messages from the computer but they fix it. Jeep Dealer strongly didn't advised LPG for that model. board computer didn't accept it.

I converted a Toyota Landcruiser 4.7 V8 to LPG. I got very frustrated with the conversion because I could not get enough Gas through to the engine if I was climbing a hill or overtaking, as soon as you put your foot down the engine switched from Gas back to Petrol as the LPG system could not physically pump the required amount of Gas into the engine. I then had to pull over, switch the engine off, then back on again to engage the LPG system. Real shame as the Landcruiser was a fantastic vehicle, plus the range on a 90l tank of gas was really disappointing. Certainly did not justify the conversion cost, should have just put that towards the fuel cost to run it.

V8's need a tandem vaporizer for that very reason, if it had one fitted it should have been fine.

There is a garage about 20 miles away from me that sells it from the pump, should make a visit one day and try it.

Someone I know converted a Fiat Coupe (modded to 350 bhp) to LPG, he had loads of problems that well outweighed the saving.

If gas was available easily and the tank was bigger (longer range) without making the load space so reduced then I would consider it. Because if it's done right the extra performance (of the converted petrol engine) would make it worthwhile against a diesel.

back on to the topic of this thread. have you all seen how the price of the LPG is creeping up more and more of late spotted some today at 53p and when you rember that the mpg goes down when you run on LPG means you need to do quite some miles to get the cost back.

Remember. Diesel was once cheaper than petrol. Until it became popular.

Cheers guys some very interesting views. my main problem is that they can only fit a 60ltr lpg tank and 25ltr petrol because i have a tow bar fitted. and i was reading last night that the goverment is to stop treating lpg as a special
case therefore the rise in duty is almost certain to rise. Our local supplier is charging 53p ltr already, so i think ill put the £2000, +

to unleaded and
take it out of the kids chrismas presents

My 8.1L Chevy runs on LPG and the price of that varies by up to 15pence/litre depending a lot on where you buy it... I haven't noticed any power drop when switching fuels

..You can keep yer poxy diesels!
