The area for lobsters is into the drying zone, but the tidal reach on some areas varies massively .. west coast is 3-5 metres ... isle of islay is 1.5-2 tops you need to know your tide and local area ... If thats in a bay .. good chance your pot will be 'collectable' without wellies !

I'm not commercial .. dinner plate for me also .. my coastline is pure rock .. I dunno how the feckers get in the pots sometimes ? plus .. ive lost many pots down holes .. but I too have to fish 'inside' the lines of the commercials now and again

Why don't you catch them snorkelling, more challenging and fun.

Soooo many reasons:

- 5 year old can only swim about 20 yards
- this is the west coast of Scotland. Basically meltwater from the Arctic
- I like the idea of chucking a trap out and returning 24hours later. Not so keen on hard work.
- trap costs £3.95 on eBay, rope £1, weight free, bait £1. All in £6 for a bit of fun. Don't fancy snorkeling with snorkle and fins that cost £3 (need two sets one for him, one for me)

...that'll do for now.

Yes that might be a little chilly!!

Used to catch them from south of you on the Isle Of Wight snorkelling but Scottish would be to cold for me. Thats extremely cheap for a trap, do they work ok?

The one I've ordered is basically a cuboid 8" square cross section about 20" long.

Made of fine mesh. And a springy wire that pops up to make its shape. The entrances are quite small hence the small lobsters.

Will take an actual picture when it arrives.

If you are in no rush you'd get it half that price from China.

I've tried those cheap ones and imagine they'd be ok close to shore but anything substantial and they split when you haul them up to a boat.
They have a small zip to access the bait area.Click image for larger version

Mine has arrived, and I've spliced a
15m length of 5mm 4ply poly propylene gearbox killer that cost me 99p on to the wire frame. Picture below (tape shows inches). Entrance is small the little ball shown is the same size as the entrances.

Dunno. The entrance is too small to get eddible lobys I think.

Its basically made of fishing net fabric.

The entrances are held into the trap (hard to climb back up as like an overhang) by fishing line. I've replaced that with cotton thread so if its lost the cotton will fail and then escape should be possible. I've also tensioned it more.

Small zip leads to a pocket for bait. Big zip let's you retrieve catch.

Will need some weights added.

What should I bait with for random Catch (pref not eels!) - not looking for big eddibles as won't get in the hole...

We usually use a bit of Mackerel for bait. I was told (no idea if it's true) fresh for crabs and not fresh for lobster.

Fillet it off the bone, so you finish up with long fillets, depending on the size of the fish they look like white pork tenderloin. Slice into medallions about 3/4" thick, egg & breadcrumb, fry in butter. Salt, pepper, lemon, crusty bread & butter, bottle of Normandy cidre👍. It's like eating a very tender fillet steak. Halibut is the closest resemblance I could think of.
