[Nauti Buoy]

My Landrover Disco TD5 last of the old shape's front left light bulb has blown.

I have taken a look as you do and I cannot see how you can get to the back as there is no access to the back of the light cluster. Have spoken to Land Rover and apparently the only way to change the bulb is to remove the light cluster, which for some reason also involves loosening the grill and bumper and also bull bars etc and will cost £109.57 inc vat to change one poxey bulb.

Any other ideas?

I got rid of my td4 because of the rip off land rover servicing. 420 quid for its first service! You could take it to a smaller independant garage and see how much, they might know an easier way of doing it.

hmm well the "Mechanical Design Engineers" at Land Rover must be on a financial kick back as to how difficult they could make changing a light bulb!!!

There aren't any lights on the stuff I work with...

They're probably on a kick-back from the dealers to come up with more and more complicated ways of foiling home-mechanics...

I could always buy a bulb, drive to some services not too far away, and phone Land Rover Assistance and say my Light bulb has gone in my headlight and can't seem to replace it as don't happen to have the correct tools to remove the front end of my car , can they send out a techy to do the job as don't want to drive illegally!!!

At the end of the day I can almost understand them making actual servicing difficult (although its still rude), but making lightbulb replacement hard?! FFS that should be a 5 minute at the side of the road job...

Suggest they change all the bulbs whilst they are at it, so you never have to do it again.

It's not just Land Rover - all new cars are going the same way. Just be thankfull they aren't HID bulbs - they cost £500 each!!!

On some new Vauxhalls you can change the bulb easy enough but it won't work until you connect up a laptop to tell the computer it has had a new bulb fitted!!!

On Smart cars changing a headlight bulb is quoted as 2 hours - and they don't have a sump plug to drain the oil.

Some new French cars need a laptop to open the rear calipers to change the brake pads.

The list is endless - it is obviously being done to scam more money out of the drivers but they get away with it by saying it's "progress"!!!

Damn and there was me hoping you of all people would have had the answer for me.

Gonna see how good there "Landrover Assistance" is tonight on the way home me thinks naturally I would have been stopped by the Police and told to stop at the next services on the motorway and buy a bulb and fit it!!!

Watch the mechanic like a hawk - there's probably a little hidden button somewhere that un-clips everything so the job really only take about 5 minutes...!

did two bulbs on my 52 plate its in the hand book yes you do have to take the car apart a bit will take about 1 hour to fit to bulbs

but you can do it your self

As codders says - not just landrover. I have a citreon which is a bloody nightmare to do - although if you dislocate your wrist whilst working completely blind, having removed the battery it is just possible. The one on the otherside requires either the bumper grill and light cluster to be removed or the hydraulic suspension cylinder! Fingers crossed I don't need to do that one. And I know someone with a Megan - who's normal local garage refused to change it for him - as there is no way I'm charging you 2 hours labour to do a bulb.

I'm not sure its done to create more money for the manufacturer from service/repair work - but rather just crap design - which is intended to be as quick to manufacture and assemble as possible and they ignore how easy it is to replace.
